Hong Kyung and Lee Jae In are set to bring a fresh wave to theaters with their upcoming film, 'Concrete Market.'
Originally conceived as a drama series, the project has now been adapted for the big screen, following in the footsteps of 'Concrete Utopia,' the 2023 hit starring Lee Byung Hun.
According to a report by Ilgan Sports on November 6, 'Concrete Market' is preparing for a nationwide release before the end of the year. The production team has recently submitted the film for rating review with the Korea Media Rating Board and is awaiting the results.
The story unfolds in a post-apocalyptic world devastated by a massive earthquake, where a surviving apartment complex transforms into a hub for bartering. Produced by Climax Studio—the same studio behind the 2023 blockbuster 'Concrete Utopia,' which drew 3.84 million viewers—'Concrete Market' promises the same level of intense storytelling and cinematic impact.

Directed by Hong Ki Won, known for the acclaimed short film 'Tylenol' (2015), the project was originally planned as a seven-episode drama series but was reimagined as a theatrical feature.
Casting was finalized in 2021 with Hong Kyung and Lee Jae In at the forefront, joined by Jung Man Sik, Kim Guk Hee, and Yoo Su Bin. Filming began in November 2021 and was completed, but its release was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other circumstances. While there had been speculation about an OTT release, it was ultimately decided to prioritize a theatrical debut. Lotte Entertainment, which handled investment and distribution for 'Concrete Utopia,' is also backing 'Concrete Market,' with potential plans for a future series format reportedly under consideration.

In the meantime, the lead actors’ profiles have risen significantly. Hong Kyung gained international recognition through the Netflix film 'Good News,' while Lee Jae In, who transitioned from child actor to leading roles, drew 1.89 million viewers with her hit 'Hi-Five,' solidifying her status as a bankable star.
In 'Concrete Market,' Hong Kyung portrays Tae Jin, the operator of the apartment’s sole market, while Lee Jae In plays Hee, a character who demonstrates composure and resilience in crisis. With a talented supporting cast including Jung Man Sik, Kim Guk Hee, and Yoo Su Bin, audiences are eagerly anticipating the chemistry between Hong Kyung and Lee Jae In.
'Concrete Market' is slated to premiere in theaters nationwide later this year.
