Veteran broadcaster Shin Dong Yup recently shared the personal hardships he endured due to a debt of 8 billion KRW (about 5.6 million USD), offering words of comfort and encouragement.
On October 20, Shin appeared on the YouTube channel zzanbro alongside popular YouTuber Tzuyang. During the conversation, he complimented Tzuyang, saying, “Your very presence is fascinating, and your smile is beautiful. Watching you eat brings happiness to people,” leaving Tzuyang visibly moved.
Shin Dong Yup also reflected on the value of expressing emotions, telling Tzuyang, “When you cry properly, it feels refreshing and clean,” before opening up about his own past struggles.
He recalled, “I once made a bad decision as a guarantor and lent my name, which caused me a lot of trouble. After work, I would receive 300 phone calls,” highlighting the immense stress he experienced.
During his prime in the early 2000s, Shin faced multiple business failures that left him with debts totaling 8 billion KRW (about 5.6 million USD). He later announced that he had cleared all debts by 2014.
Reflecting on those difficult times, Shin said, “I couldn’t focus on broadcasting because of thoughts like, ‘What is this?’ and ‘What am I even doing?’ People may not have known the details, but I think they could tell that I wasn’t happy on air.”
He offered Tzuyang further guidance, noting, “There may not always be time to enjoy meals in peace. But as you grow older and become more considerate of your surroundings, truly enjoying your food will make those who watch even happier.”
