On the September 19 broadcast of MBC’s popular variety show 'I Live Alone,' SHINee’s Key opened up about his family’s remarkable legacy of patriotism.
During the episode, Key revealed that his paternal grandfather, great-uncle, and maternal grandfather were all recognized as national veterans. Arriving at the National Yeongcheon Memorial Park, he shared, “My paternal grandfather fought in the Korean War. September holds a special meaning for me, so I came to visit my grandparents after a long time.”
Key’s solemn demeanor caught viewers’ attention, as he quietly paid his respects without even playing music along the way.
He further explained that his paternal grandfather and great-uncle both served in the Korean War, while his maternal grandfather participated in the Vietnam War, surprising many fans. Key added, “My grandfather was wounded in the war and suffered an ankle injury. He was officially recognized by the nation for his service and was laid to rest at the memorial in 2005.”
Reflecting on his childhood memories, Key shared, “When I was young, my family went to see the movie 'Taegukgi.' My grandfather couldn’t watch it because he cried so much. He said the movie barely represented a tenth of the horrors he experienced during the war.” Key recalled the vividness of those memories, saying, “I was in elementary school at the time, but it’s still very clear in my mind.”
This heartfelt revelation offered a rare glimpse into the personal history of one of K-pop’s beloved idols, showing the profound respect and pride he holds for his family’s sacrifices.
