[INTERVIEW] AtHeart dishes on their debut EP ‘Plot Twist,’ says they’re “excited to bring a fresh energy to the K-pop scene”

The K-pop industry sees another promising girl group as AtHeart (Michi, Katelyn, Seohyeon, Aurora, Bome, Arin, and Nahyun) debuts with their inaugural project, ‘Plot Twist.’

Their first mini-album features five emotionally-driven tracks that convey a compelling story: “Plot Twist,” “Push Back,” “Dot Dot Dot…,” “Knew Me,” and “Good Girl.”

Following their debut, allkpop chatted with AtHeart to talk about their debut and aspirations. Check out our exclusive interview with AtHeart below!

allkpop: First of all, congratulations on your first EP! Introduce yourselves to everyone, and tell us a TMI.

ARIN: Hello, this is Arin from AtHeart! It still feels like a dream that we’ve debuted. Every single day feels fun and new to me, and I’m really looking forward to what’s ahead!

NAHYUN: Hello, I’m Nahyun, the youngest member of AtHeart! I’m having such joyful and happy days after our debut!

SEOHYEON: Hi, I’m Seohyeon from AtHeart. Since our debut, our schedule is fully packed, but I’m enjoying it!

MICHI: Hello, I’m Michi from AtHeart! I came to Korea from Hawaii to follow my dreams of becoming a K-pop idol! My TMI is that at our debut showcase, I was the only one who didn’t cry on stage, but I cried a lot afterwards when I saw the fans up close!

BOME: Hi, I’m Bome from AtHeart, I look quiet but I’m actually the most active one among the team!

KATELYN: Hi, I’m Katelyn Tan from AtHeart and I’m from the Philippines!

allkpop: You’re just a few weeks into your official debut as K-pop idols. How has your experience been so far?

NAHYUN: First of all, I’m amazed and feeling truly grateful to those fans who support me. Whenever I see our fans, I feel overwhelmed. Also, since I’m experiencing things I had only ever watched on TV, it feels like I’m living in a dream.

BOME: Even though it’s only been a short time, there have been so many new and first-time experiences. Maybe because I worried a lot more than anything else, instead of feeling tired, I actually feel so much fun and happiness. Seeing all the things I had only dreamed about slowly becoming reality makes me feel even more grateful and joyful.

allkpop: If you could introduce yourself and AtHeart in one phrase or sentence, how would you do it?

MICHI: Just like me, AtHeart is a group made up of many different colors that come together harmoniously to form a pure-hearted rainbow!

SEOHYEON: We’re a group where each of our unique charms and qualities come together beautifully, just like a special gift set!

allkpop: Let’s talk about your album, ‘Plot Twist.’ How did you find the preparations? Are there any fun or memorable moments behind the scenes that you’d like to share with us?

BOME: I think waiting for the shoots we did before our debut, and then getting together with the members to watch and react to them, was such a fun experience. I felt so happy when the results turned out even better than I was expecting!

allkpop: What was your initial reaction when you heard the tracks on the album?

KATELYN: When I first heard the tracks on the album, I was shocked and just fell in love with our songs. I especially liked how each song has a different vibe from the others.

NAHYUN: Since the beat and vibe felt so new and refreshing, I had the confidence that we could express it well and do a great job. That’s why I really wanted to show it to everyone as soon as possible. While preparing for the album, I was so excited every day because I couldn’t wait to share it with you!

allkpop: Which artists influenced you the most to walk the same path?

SEOHYEON: I feel like I’ve learned a lot from each and every artist that I look up to.

ARIN: For me, it’s BLACKPINK’s Jennie sunbaenim. I think Jennie sunbaenim has always known what she wanted and liked ever since she was young, and she worked tirelessly toward her dream, which made her who she is today. Those qualities have really inspired me and helped me grow into a better artist as well!

MICHI: Thank you so much to everyone who has supported us from the very beginning of our journey! Your love motivates us to work even harder and fuels our passion for performing.
