Renowned South Korean TV personality Yoo Jae Suk, widely known as the “Nation’s MC,” is earning praise for his spotless tax record spanning over three decades — and the reason behind it has left many surprised.
On a recent episode of “Tax-saving TV”, a YouTube channel hosted by tax professionals, certified tax accountant Yoon Na Gyeom explained why Yoo has never once been embroiled in a tax controversy, despite undergoing multiple rigorous tax audits.
“Most celebrities in Korea operate as sole proprietors and file their taxes by keeping detailed books,” Yoon said. “This method allows for many business expenses to be deducted and helps reduce the overall tax burden, but it’s complex and time-consuming.”
However, Yoo Jae Suk has chosen a completely different path — one that’s rare among high-earning entertainers. Instead of itemizing his business expenses, Yoo files his taxes using the standard expense rate method (also known as “estimated taxation”), which applies a fixed deduction rate determined by the government, regardless of actual business costs.
Yoon elaborated on the financial difference:
“Let’s say a celebrity earns 10 billion KRW (approx. 7.2 million USD). With detailed bookkeeping, they might pay around 2.7 billion KRW in taxes. But with Yoo’s method, he pays approximately 4.1 billion KRW — over 1.4 billion KRW more. He’s voluntarily choosing to pay more to maintain transparency.”
The reason, Yoon said, is simple: reputation and trust.
“By opting for the standard method, Yoo avoids any risk of being accused of underreporting income or manipulating expense records. It saves him time, eliminates stress over documentation, and lets him focus entirely on his broadcasting career.”
Yoo’s choice reflects a sense of civic responsibility, Yoon added, calling it a noblesse oblige approach rare in the entertainment industry.
“Other entertainers often reduce their taxable income by labeling personal spending as business expenses or hiring family members as employees. The fact that Yoo has never been flagged for audit issues means he hasn’t claimed such questionable deductions in the first place.”
Yoon concluded:
“From a tax professional’s perspective, Yoo Jae Suk may be overpaying rather than underpaying. It’s a rare case where a public figure puts integrity above financial savings. He chose trust over money — and that’s what makes him the true ‘Nation’s MC.’”
