SBS has unveiled the first teaser for its new Friday-Saturday drama, 'The Mantis: Original Sin,' directed by Byun Young Joo and written by Lee Young Jong. Produced by Studio S, Merry Christmas, Mega Monster, and Docu-Factory Vista, the drama is set to premiere on September 5.
'The Mantis: Original Sin' is a high-intensity crime thriller that unfolds 20 years after the capture of a ruthless serial killer known as "The Mantis." A series of copycat murders sparks a tense investigation and forces a detective to unexpectedly collaborate with his mother, the infamous Mantis herself, to solve the case.
The first teaser opens with a tense face-to-face between Go Hyun Jung and Jang Dong Yoon. Jang coldly remarks, “It feels warm… the hands that killed five people,” hinting at the chilling history between the two. The reason for his icy demeanor soon becomes clear when Go Hyun Jung casually utters horrifying lines only a killer could say. She says, “I should have taken them off one by one from that body.”
The teaser then cuts rapidly between shocking scenes. Go Hyun Jung is shown surveying crime scenes, smiling as she commits murder, and losing herself in a sudden burst of excitement. Each frame, splattered like the bright red blood on her face, leaves viewers unsettled.
The tense dynamic between the serial killer mother and detective son escalates as the city is shaken by gruesome copycat murders. Fellow officers Jo Sung Ha, played by Choi Joong Ho, and Lee El, played by Kim Na Hee, are brought in to contain the chaos. The stark contrast between the relentless police team and Go Hyun Jung’s eerie smiles leaves a lasting impression.
Jang Dong Yoon delivers a searing condemnation of his mother. He says, “You are a butcher who loves the smell of blood, a mantis, just a monster.” The teaser closes, leaving audiences questioning the fate of the serial killer mother and her detective son and how the 20-year-old chain of murders will spiral into new shocking events.
Despite its brief runtime of around 40 seconds, the first teaser effectively conveys the twisted relationship between Go Hyun Jung and Jang Dong Yoon, highlighting the actors’ bold transformations. It also hints at the story’s central plotline of copycat murders and the investigation while giving a glimpse of the grotesque and stylistically intense tone of the drama, building anticipation for its premiere.
SBS’s new Friday-Saturday drama, 'The Mantis: Original Sin,' premieres on September 5 at 9:50 PM KST.
