Netflix has confirmed that its original film 'Good News' will premiere on October 17. The film is a dark comedy drama centered on a suspicious mission to land a hijacked passenger plane in 1970.
'Good News' has already drawn international attention, having been officially invited to the Special Presentation section of the '50th Toronto International Film Festival' (TIFF).
The story follows a mysterious fixer known only as Amugae (played by Sul Kyung Gu) and elite Air Force lieutenant Seo Go Myeong (Hong Kyung) as they are thrown into a high-stakes operation to resolve the hijacking crisis. Under orders from the head of the Korean Central Intelligence Agency, Park Sang Hyun (Ryu Seung Bum), the two must find a way to ensure the hijacked aircraft lands at all costs.
The teaser poster sets the stage with the Korean Peninsula as its backdrop, capturing both the tense silhouettes of the main characters and the urgent atmosphere of 1970. The film takes inspiration from a real incident in which a Japanese communist group hijacked a passenger plane and forced it to fly to Pyongyang, blending history with creative fiction.
The trailer hints at the film’s layered themes with provocative lines such as, “Sometimes even the truth tells a lie,” “And lies can speak the truth,” and “The unbelievable news.” These captions point to a narrative that blurs the boundaries between truth and fabrication, reality and fiction.
Netflix introduced the film by saying, “'Good News' is both comic and weighty, maximizing the appeal of fiction rooted in a real event. It will leave global audiences with both shock and a lasting impression.”
