A woman in her 40s has received a suspended prison sentence for posting false comments claiming she was being monitored and threatened by actor Gong Yoo.
According to the legal community on the 29th, the Daejeon District Court’s Criminal Division 5 sentenced the woman, identified as 'A', to six months in prison with two years of probation for violating the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection.
In mid-January 2020, 'A' posted defamatory comments during a live broadcast hosted by Gong Yoo, saying things like, “I’m being threatened from behind, and there isn’t a single day I haven’t been threatened” and “He torments me to the point of neurosis.”
It was confirmed that Gong Yoo had no personal relationship with A and that no sexual assault occurred.
The court stated, “The claims made by A are completely groundless and, beyond that, she repeatedly spread false information over a long period. Even though the victim is a public figure and naturally subject to public attention, the nature of the crime is very serious.”
The court also noted, “Although the defendant has two prior convictions for similar offenses, her acknowledgment of the crime and her intention to receive treatment at a hospital were taken into account in sentencing.”
