On July 16, as the group marks their 20th anniversary with the comeback track “Express Mode,” Super Junior’s Kim Heechul shared a refreshingly honest (and very Heechul-esque) Instagram Story that had fans laughing, tearing up, and cheering him on.
Heechul clarified he wasn’t drinking but simply en route to his schedule. What followed was a candid and heartfelt message:
"I didn’t drink. I’m on my way to a schedule.
I’m especially excited about this promotion 😍
There are so many contents I don’t know,..."
He then compared himself to Mowgli from 'The Jungle Book,' saying he just held hands and followed Eunhyuk and Leeteuk through the whirlwind of schedules and content.
Heechul admitted that the past few years had left his "mind and heart had been kind of messed up," but reuniting with the members for rehearsals and performances has been a form of emotional healing:
"It feels like I’ve entered a new world— Well, it’s the same world, But it’s been so long for me 😋
My emotions have been swinging up and down
for the first time in a while,
and I feel like I’m going crazy throughout this promotion
—in a good way 🤪"
"Even if my dancing looks wild like a beagle, just being at the back, watching the members’ butts (lol), brings me such great happiness and joy. A view only I get to see... My own special view that you all can’t see."
He ended on a more heartfelt note:
"As expected, the greatest dopamine boost for a guy like me is SJ & ELF. That’s what I’m saying 🤗"
This is Heechul’s first time performing full choreography in over a decade. Although he remained active in tours and promotions until around 2015, he gradually stepped back from Super Junior activities due to a 2006 car accident that shattered his left leg, fracturing his femur, knee, and ankle. He wore metal rods and pins for about two years during recovery and has dealt with chronic pain ever since.
