Singer and actor Lee Hongki is set to share the turbulent survival story of Korea’s original Hallyu band.
On the July 16 KST episode of MBC’s 'Radio Star', Lee Hongki opens up about his childhood battle with suppurative hidradenitis, revealing, “I’ve had to undergo surgery eight times because of it.” He candidly discusses the complex he developed from the condition and how he eventually overcame it. “Thanks to that, I even became a public ambassador for skin disease awareness,” he adds, surprising viewers.
When asked about comparisons to actor Jang Geun Suk, Lee jokes, “If you’re tall, you’re Jang Geun Suk. If you sing well, you’re me,” prompting laughter on set. He also recalls being ranked among the least likable celebrities in Japan after bluntly critiquing Japanese food on a TV show. “It caused quite a stir among fans after the broadcast,” he says. To this, his close friend Jang Geun Suk chimes in, “That’s just an excuse—there’s a real reason,” sparking curiosity.
Lee introduces his YouTube cover song project Monthly FT, saying, “I plan everything myself and film new videos each month.” One of the covers, “Fighting Spirit”, garnered nearly 5 million views, with Lee expressing how meaningful it was since “it was something I created with my fans.”
Showing his love for band music, he says, “I want to organize my own rock festival someday,” passionately sharing his long-held dream. He then turns to his agency with a playful jab: “If you’re going to help me, do it properly,” drawing laughter on set.
The episode airs at 10:30 p.m. on July 16.
