'K-Pop Demon Hunters' has been a breakout hit on Netflix, especially in South Korea, where it quickly became one of the platform’s most-watched animated titles. Co-directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the film mixes the flash of K-pop with supernatural action, following three idols who moonlight as demon hunters while taking on Gwi-Ma, the king of demons.
In a recent interview, Director Kang shared that the original idea for Gwi-Ma was very different from what audiences saw in the final cut. “When we first started casting, we had an idea of Gwi-Ma being a wannabe idol himself,” she said. “So we thought of J.Y. Park. However, later the vibe of Gwi-Ma changed to a more traditional villain, so Lee Byung-hun was cast.”
J.Y. Park, founder of JYP Entertainment, is known for his bold stage presence and theatrical style. That early version of Gwi-Ma, who was part idol and part eccentric, was clearly shaped with him in mind.
But as the tone of the story evolved, the role eventually went to veteran actor Lee Byung-hun, whose deep voice and gravitas gave Gwi-Ma the kind of menacing presence the film ultimately needed. With a career that spans both Korean blockbusters and Hollywood films, Lee brought weight and intensity to the character.
'K-Pop Demon Hunters' continues to gain attention for its bold concept and production choices, and Kang’s behind-the-scenes insight adds another layer of intrigue to the film’s creative journey.
