Actresses Park So Dam and Park Won Sook have recently drawn attention after it was revealed that they are sixth cousins.
Park So Dam’s agency, Artist Company, confirmed the relation, stating that Park So Dam is the granddaughter of Park Won Sook’s cousin. The two are connected through Park Won Sook’s cousin-brother, making them distant relatives—a fact that even many within the industry were unaware of.
Interestingly, the two actresses worked together on the 2015 film The Throne, but they kept their family connection hidden even on set. It’s reported that they remained supportive of each other behind the scenes, with Park Won Sook offering advice throughout Park So Dam’s acting career.
After the news broke, netizens reacted with comments like, “Park So Dam must have inherited her acting skills,” “They do resemble each other,” and “It must have been hard to pretend not to know each other on set.”
In the past, Park Won Sook appeared on the KBS2 program Let’s Live Together, where she was reunited with her biological granddaughter. She opened up about her difficult personal life, including three marriages. She married young and had a son with her first husband, but they divorced due to his repeated business failures. After briefly remarrying him, they divorced again six months later due to infidelity.
She later remarried a Korean-American man, but after financial issues, they divorced as well. Her only son tragically died in a car accident in 2003. Though she lost contact with her granddaughter after her daughter-in-law remarried, they reconnected when the granddaughter was in high school.
On the show, Park Won Sook warmly welcomed her granddaughter with a home-cooked meal, saying tearfully, “Thank you. Thank you for growing up well, for being a good student, and for not causing trouble. I’m proud of you.” She added, “I regret not doing more for your father when he was alive. So now, I want to do everything I can for you.”
Meanwhile, Park So Dam, who is Park Won Sook’s sixth cousin, debuted in the 2013 film No More No Less, gaining recognition with Ingtoogi and later starring in The Silenced, The Priests, and The Throne. She rose to international fame for her role in Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite (2019), where she played art tutor Kim Ki Jung, impressing audiences with her confident and sly performance.
Reflecting on Parasite, Park So Dam said, “I was truly happy. For the first time, I was completely immersed in my role. Before, I used to think only about doing well. This time, I got to really see the faces of all the crew members. I realized how many people work so hard behind the scenes. My perspective has widened.”
