Netflix’s animated film 'KPop Demon Hunters,' directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, premiered on June 20 and quickly captured global attention. The film topped the Top 10 rankings in 41 countries, proving its widespread appeal.

At the center of the story is Jinwoo, a member of the fictional boy group Saja Boys. Behind his glamorous idol persona, he is also a grim reaper who hunts human souls. Actor Ahn Hyo Seop voiced the character in the English version.

In a recent interview, Ahn explained why he chose to join the project. "I’ve always been curious about voice acting, and I wanted to give something back to my international fans," he said. "When I received a letter from director Maggie Kang, I was touched by her warm words and deep affection for the project. Her sincerity made me want to be a part of it."

He also described the unique recording process. "Since I was in Korea and the production team was in the United States, we recorded everything remotely over video calls. We set up a camera next to the microphone to capture my facial expressions and movements. These reference videos were used to help bring Jinwoo’s emotions and actions to life. I think that connection helped the character feel more real."

Working with directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans was also a valuable experience. "Animation was a new and unfamiliar format for me, so there were some challenges. But both directors guided me with care and detail, which helped me adjust quickly. They encouraged me to explore different tones, speeds, and rhythms for the same lines. I really appreciated the freedom they gave me to experiment and express myself."

He also reflected on the emotional depth of Jinwoo. "I think Jinwoo’s inner demon was born from guilt and regret, caused by decisions he couldn’t avoid. Facing your inner darkness is never easy, but it is something everyone goes through. Jinwoo eventually confronts that pain and grows stronger because of it."

Ahn shared how he felt when he first saw the completed film. "My heart was full. Even when reading the script, I couldn’t fully imagine how it would all come together. But the final version far exceeded my expectations. It was so beautiful and moving. Every scene felt like a dream."

He pointed out what makes 'KPop Demon Hunters' different from other animated films. "I think the biggest difference is how central emotion is to the story. In many animations, music stays in the background. But in this film, music, story, and emotions are all connected. It feels more like a live performance or a movie with a powerful stage presence."

Finally, he spoke about the message he hopes the film delivers. "Everyone has a shadow inside them, and sometimes it takes courage to face it. I hope this film encourages people to accept that part of themselves. In the end, Rumi finds her voice and strength, and I hope many viewers find comfort and courage through her journey."

'KPop Demon Hunters' follows the double life of K-pop girl group HUNTRIX, who are global idols on stage and fierce demon slayers behind the scenes. The film has received praise for its creative mix of K-pop, fantasy, action, and elements of traditional Korean culture.
