Filming has begun for ‘Three Meals in Kenya’, a spinoff of the popular variety show ‘New Journey to the West’.
According to reports on May 14th KST, Lee Soo Geun, Eun Ji Won, and Kyuhyun recently departed Korea to begin filming ‘Three Meals in Kenya’. With this, rumors of discord between Lee Soo Geun and producing director Na Young Seok have been definitively laid to rest.
Lee Soo Geun previously addressed the speculation on another variety show, saying, “It’s been six years since we last filmed the ‘New Journey to the West’ series. People kept asking if something had happened or why the show wasn’t continuing.”
He explained, “Na PD handles many programs. When you’re waiting your turn, it sometimes gets pushed back. It’s not like I can clear my schedule anytime. I wasn’t on standby, so things got delayed. But we recently went on a trip together. While we haven’t worked together on broadcast, we’ve kept meeting personally.”
‘Three Meals in Kenya’ was originally promised as a prize during ‘New Journey to the West 7’ in 2019. At the time, Kyuhyun won a game and selected a “Kenya giraffe hotel stay” as his reward, solidifying a future Kenya trip for him, Lee Soo Geun, and Eun Ji Won.
However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, production was postponed indefinitely. Many thought the spinoff had been canceled altogether—but six years later, production has resumed in earnest.
Lee Soo Geun, Eun Ji Won, and Kyuhyun are now in Kenya and expected to showcase their signature chemistry once again.
Meanwhile, the original ‘New Journey to the West’ series has not aired a new season since Season 8 in late 2020. With many fans still eagerly awaiting Season 9, the launch of ‘Three Meals in Kenya’ may signal a long-awaited revival of the beloved franchise.
