Amid growing controversy over actor Yoo Ah In's involvement in the upcoming action-comedy film 'HI-FIVE,' director Kang Hyoung Chul has publicly addressed the issue, emphasizing the collective effort behind the project.
At a press screening and media conference held on the 26th at CGV Yongsan I'Park Mall in Seoul, Kang stated, “This film is not about one person,” when asked about the casting of Yoo Ah In. “It is a heartfelt project created through the dedication of many individuals who devoted a part of their lives to it.”
Kang highlighted the strong performances of the ensemble cast and the film’s energetic and sincere tone. “I understand the concerns surrounding the controversy,” he continued, “but I firmly believe the film’s strength and the passionate acting of the cast are more than enough to outweigh any risks.”
'HI-FIVE' tells the story of five individuals who gain unique superpowers after receiving organ transplants. They band together to confront those who seek to exploit their abilities. Yoo Ah In plays the role of Gi Dong, a tech-savvy slacker who can manipulate electronic devices with a snap of his fingers.
Kang also revealed that Yoo contributed creative input during the costume fitting process. “He had a clear understanding of his character's style, and his suggestions were quite helpful. I often consult actors about costume ideas, and Yoo was no exception.”
Actor Ahn Jae Hong, who co-stars in the film, commented on a notable scene involving a kiss between his character and Yoo Ah In’s. “It was a symbolic moment showing the emotional reconciliation between two previously antagonistic characters,” Ahn said. “I approached it with sincerity, understanding its importance in the character arc.”
Yoo Ah In is currently facing legal issues over allegations of drug abuse. He has been indicted without detention on charges of using propofol 181 times between 2020 and 2022, and illegally obtaining sleeping pills under another person’s name. He was sentenced to one year in prison, suspended for two years, in the first trial. A final decision is pending as the prosecution has appealed the verdict to the Supreme Court.
Despite the controversy, 'HI-FIVE' is set to hit theaters on the 30th. Whether the film’s storytelling and performances can overcome the shadow cast by Yoo Ah In’s legal troubles remains to be seen.
