Before the filters and perfect edits, K-pop was pure fun - and fans want that energy back

Since its emergence in the 1990s, K-pop has now turned into a global entertainment empire. With high-budget music videos, viral dance challenges, and chart-centred strategies, it’s clear the industry has become more polished than ever. But somewhere in that evolution, something got lost: those quirky variety shows, hilarious skits, and raw, unscripted idol moments that once defined the heart of K-pop. For many fans, those were the golden days.

K-pop fans miss these quirky traditions and variety shows that once defined the spirit of the industry but are now largely a thing of the past.

Groups Parodying Hit K-Dramas

Remember when K-pop groups used to spoof popular K-dramas, complete with cross-dressing, exaggerated acting, and inside jokes tailored for fans? BIGBANG’s parodies of 'Boys Over Flowers,' 'Coffee Prince,' and 'Secret Garden' weren’t just funny; they were iconic, showcasing the playful chemistry among the members. These skits have become treasures of the past, as idols nowadays rarely make any fun parody of dramas.

We Got Married

‘We Got Married’ was a variety show that once defined a whole generation of K-pop variety content, pairing up idols and celebrities into fictional marriages and tasking them to complete various challenges together. The show gave us popular on-screen idol couples like Seohyun & Jung Yong-hwa, Yook Sung-jae & Joy, Nichkhun & Victoria, and Taemin & Son Na-eun. It remains a one-of-a-kind concept that’s sorely missed in today’s polished K-pop landscape.

Star Golden Bell

'Star Golden Bell' was one of the most beloved variety shows of its time that let K-pop fans watch their favourite idols cut loose in a chaotic classroom-style game show. With its witty quizzes, wordplay challenges, and unpredictable antics, the show brought together actors, comedians, and idols from groups like SNSD, 2PM, SHINee, Kara, EXO, Sistar, and more. Fans would love to see that format make a comeback.

Let’s Go Dream Team

'Let’s Go Dream Team' featured Korean celebrities competing in obstacle courses, relay races, and endurance challenges. This variety show tested physical strength, showcasing the athletic side of K-pop idols as they climbed walls, jumped over hurdles, or dove into muddy pools. Idols like SHINee’s Minho, known for his fierce athleticism, gained legendary status thanks to his competitive spirit on the show.

Hello Baby

Ever wonder what your bias would be like as a parent? ‘Hello Baby’ put idols in charge of raising children ages 5 and under, giving us adorable, clumsy parenting gold. Idols were tasked with becoming a temporary “parent,” managing everything from diaper changes and mealtimes to emotional bonding and tantrums. Featuring groups like SHINee, SNSD, T-ara, and Sistar, among others, ‘Hello Baby’ delivered countless moments of unfiltered charm and genuine emotion.

Invincible Youth

Watching members from different girl groups do farm work together and build rural friendships while competing in challenges involving agrarian or domestic tasks gave fans a refreshing break from the glamour of K-pop. Fans miss shows like ‘Invincible Youth,’ and many still wish for its return, with today’s 4th and 5th generation idols experiencing the same rural format.

Cross-Dressing K-pop Covers

Once upon a time, it was an annual tradition for boy groups to pay homage to popular girl groups by performing their songs—in full makeup, wigs, ladies’ costumes, and even heels. SHINee and Super Junior dancing to SNSD’s “GEE,” BIGBANG’s performance of S.E.S’ “I LOVE YOU," NU'EST, BTOB, A-JAX, and VIXX teaming up to cover Girls Day, or GOT7 performing AOA’s “Mini Skirt” - these iconic stages were fan service at its finest and are sorely missed.

1Thek Run To You

‘A live show where the stars go to you,’ 1theK’s 'Run To You’ brought K-pop idols straight to everyday places—train stations, parks, malls—to perform live in front of unsuspecting crowds. The show captured K-pop at its most raw and real: no filters, no fancy lights, just talent meeting the public. The joy, chaos, and authenticity of those performances are hard to replicate.

MBC Music Core Outdoor Stages

Back in the day, MBC's ‘Music Core’ used to have outdoor live stages, where idols performed in extraordinary and unexpected outdoor venues, from helipads and theme parks to city plazas and waterparks, sometimes with a crowd and sometimes without. Longtime K-pop fans miss those outdoor stages and wish MBC would revive the format.

Long Storyline Music Videos

There was an era in K-pop when music videos were full-blown cinematic experiences, some running over 10 minutes long. Groups like T-ARA, B.A.P, and TVXQ have some of the longest K-pop MVs that told rich, dramatic stories filled with complex characters, plot twists, and emotional weight. T-ARA, in particular, is famous for their extensive collection of lengthy music videos.
