As of March 6, 'Shiri,' Korea’s first blockbuster film directed by Kang Je Gyu, and starring Han Suk Kyu, Choi Min Shik, Song Kang Ho, and Kim Yunjin, is set to return to theaters with a 4K remastered version on March 19. The movie has also revealed its new posters ahead of the release.
Originally released in 1999, 'Shiri' tells the story of Yu Jung Won (Han Suk Kyu), a special agent working for South Korea’s intelligence agency OP, and his partner Lee Jang Gil (Song Kang Ho), as they battle against North Korean special forces general Park Mu Young (Choi Min Sik) and a network of spies from both North Korea and within their own ranks.
As the film that kicked off Korea’s cinematic renaissance and reshaped the box office, 'Shiri' is returning to theaters with a 4K remaster on March 19. The movie became a massive hit in the late 90s and is considered Korea’s first true blockbuster.
The film won several awards at the '35th Baeksang Arts Awards,' including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actor for Han Suk Kyu, and also took home Best Director and the Highest-Grossing Korean Film Award at the '20th Blue Dragon Film Awards.' At the time of its release, 'Shiri' stunned audiences with its intense action, large-scale visuals, suspenseful espionage, and emotional moments, setting a new standard for blockbusters in Korean cinema.
The newly released posters for the remastered version showcase the powerful presence of the movie’s top actors. One poster features Han Suk Kyu, Choi Min Sik, Song Kang Ho, and Kim Yunjin with the Korean Peninsula in the background, highlighting their intense auras. The other poster, set against a map, shows Han Suk Kyu and Song Kang Ho aiming their guns at Choi Min Sik, whose tense expression adds to the suspense. The tagline “To trust or to protect?” hints at the dramatic twists to come.
Additionally, Kim Yunjin’s intense gaze as Lee Myung Hyun, Yu Jung Won’s love interest, is expected to heighten the film’s tension.
'Shiri' will return to theaters on March 19 in 4K remastered format.
