As of January 23, Joo Ji Hoon shared insights into his role in the upcoming Netflix original series 'The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call,' where he plays Baek Kang Hyuk, a genius surgeon who is tasked with reviving a struggling trauma team at a university hospital.
Based on the webtoon 'The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call,' the drama follows Baek Kang Hyuk as he faces life-or-death situations while challenging corruption and inefficiencies within the medical system.
In a recent interview, Joo Ji Hoon reflected on the significant effort he put into preparing for the role, particularly in accurately portraying medical procedures.
He explained that it had been 12 years since he last wore a doctor’s coat for his role in 'Medical Top Team' (2013), and this time, he wanted to ensure that the surgical scenes were as realistic as possible. Recognizing the immense responsibility of depicting life-and-death moments, he was deeply committed to making sure the audience would be fully immersed in the story.
Joo Ji Hoon revealed that 'The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call' was the most exhausting project of his 20-year career. “Even with the same type of action, I made sure to approach every scene with a new perspective,” he said. He also shared that the production team spent long hours discussing how to adapt the webtoon’s fantastical elements into a drama that was both thrilling and believable. “Our show isn’t just fantasy—it’s pure fantasy," he explained, acknowledging the challenge of making it resonate as a grounded, exciting narrative.
Despite the high stakes of the story, Joo Ji Hoon expressed his excitement about Baek Kang Hyuk’s character, who will go to any length to save lives, even if it means confronting injustice. "The sense of catharsis that comes from seeing his bold actions is something I hope the audience will connect with," he said. Joo Ji Hoon also mentioned that the timing of the show’s premiere, coming during the holiday season, made it an ideal moment for viewers to enjoy the series with a relaxed mindset.
'The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call' will be available for streaming on Netflix starting January 24.
