TV personality Hong Jin Kyung has spoken out about the recent talks surrounding her hairstyle.
On September 10, a video titled "Hong Jin Kyung Explains Hair Controversy" was uploaded to the YouTube channel 'Disney Plus Korea.'
In the video, Hong Jin Kyung said, "I’m aware that there has been a lot of controversy due to my current hairstyle. Honestly, it was really hard for me."
Recalling her experience during the filming of 'My Name is Gabriel,' she shared, "They placed me among 20-year-old models and told me to 'live like a local 20-year-old model,' so I really resented the production team."
She added, "I felt like I was the only one who looked like an 'ahjummah (middle-aged lady).' If I had at least brought a wig, I might have been able to style myself better."
Hong Jin Kyung said that she visited a local salon in Rwanda to stand out.
She confessed, "I went to the salon, got my hair cut with some edge, braided it, and ended up with a dreadlock style. But the moment I saw the scissors, I felt uneasy."
She humorously shared, "It was really a pair of scissors you’d find in a stationery store. Thankfully, the stylist was skilled, but more hair was cut off than I expected. That part was really disappointing," drawing laughter.
In fact, the August 23rd episode of JTBC's 'My Name is Gabriel' showed the scene of Hong Jin Kyung’s visit to the Rwandan salon.
Hong Jin Kyung asked, "Just trim the long hair on the sides," and gave detailed styling requests.
"I’ll leave everything to fate," she said, but upon seeing the scissors, she exclaimed, "Aren't these stationery scissors? This is crazy," clearly flustered.
She joked, "That stylist is practically the Jung Saem Mool (stylist) of Rwanda," but also showed unease at the different cutting techniques used compared to those in Korea.
Though the stylist switched to electric clippers as suggested, the result was a much shorter cut, resembling a military buzz cut, which drew laughter.
Hong Jin Kyung, unable to hide her surprise, remarked, "Do I look like Maeng Goo (a comical character)?"
Finally, she added with a hint of joking bitterness, "When I get back to Seoul, I won’t go out until my hair grows back. No one will be able to contact me" making everyone laugh.
