Netizens question how Lim Jae Hyun is beating LE SSERAFIM and Taeyeon on the charts

AKP STAFF

Singer Lim Jae Hyun, previously involved in "saejagi" or chart manipulation rumors, is facing new accusations by netizens with his latest release, "Rainy Rhapsody." The track has drawn attention after achieving notable success on major music charts.

On January 12, "Rainy Rhapsody" reached the top spot on Melon's Top 100 chart, Korea's largest music platform. Additionally, during the second week of January, it also claimed the number one position on Genie Music's weekly chart. The song, a remake of Choi Jae Hoon's original, is a moving ballad that explores themes of separation.

The song's success can be attributed to its combination of a familiar melody and Lim Jae Hyun's exceptional vocal skills, which has resonated with audiences.

"Rainy Rhapsody" claimed the top spot, surpassing the enduring hit "Perfect Night" by LE SSERAFIM on the Melon Top 100 chart and Taeyeon's "To.X" on the Genie Music weekly chart.

Since its release on December 3, 2023, "Rainy Rhapsody" has maintained a consistent and impressive popularity streak for over a month, consistently securing high positions on the charts. Looking ahead, Lim Jae Hyun is gearing up to release a new song as early as this spring.

Despite the artist facing earlier rumors of chart manipulation, it has been clarified by all of Korea's investigative agencies, including the police, prosecution, and judiciary (Eastern District Prosecutors' Office), that the accusation of "Singer Lim Jae Hyun engaging in chart manipulation is unequivocally false." They confirmed that Lim Jae Hyun was not involved in any chart manipulation activities. In fact, Block B member Park Kyung had to compensate Lim Jae Hyung with 30 million KRW (~23,000 USD) after publicly accusing Lim Jae Hyun of committing 'Sajaegi' without proof.

However, despite this, netizens are suspecting chart manipulation because his latest song was able to beat out many popular K-pop tracks once again.

Korean netizens commented, "The reason it can only be seen as chart manipulation is that sites like Melon are affected by fandom. How did a singer with almost no fandom and hardly any recognition there manage to take first place?" "This is why I listen to Spotify. Melon is filled with chart manipulation," "I get the song is good but he beat LE SSERAFIM? Taeyeon? And aespa??" "There are songs that barely make it to the chart even if you stream the song for 24 hours straight for one month long," "Am I the only one who doesn't know about this song?" "Who is this?" and "Is there a new way to top the charts other than chart manipulation that we don't know about?"
