Staff Picks: Our Favorite Albums of 2023

AKP STAFF

2023 was another year filled with amazing K-Pop releases. Out of the countless new albums that came our way this year, here are the favorites that the allkpop staff loved the most!

MaiaD's pick: TXT - The Name Chapter: Temptation

With the album being released on January 27, 2023, it was definitely the best way to start the year. From the release of several preview concept photos that excited everyone and looked forward to the album, it did not fail to live up to the hype when the five tracks were finally released through various streaming platforms. The album incorporated their intricate storytelling while solidifying their identity as a group that can dive into different genres. They even stayed true to their concept of growing alongside their music, as the songs include more mature themes and how they tread the temptation of settling instead of growing into uncertain adulthood. I liked the album throughout, which is yet another no-skip album from TXT, with the captivating title track, "Sugar Rush Ride", the addictive beats of the English track "Devil by the Window", the very fun "Happy Fools" with Coi Leray as featuring, the emotional ballad "Farewell, Neverland", and my personal favorite, "Tinnitus" embracing trendy beats despite sad lyrics.

Lorraine's Pick: Balming Tiger - January Never Dies

Despite its unconventional sound and approach to K-Pop, "January Never Dies" by Balming Tiger is my Album of the Year. The diverse collective challenges the norms of pop music with an innovative fusion of genres that lead to a groundbreaking sonic landscape. The South Korean collective skillfully combines elements of hip-hop, electronic, and experimental music, creating a genre-defying experience not found with any other artist. The album's bold beats, intricate melodies, and thought-provoking lyrics not only showcases the group's musical prowess but also pushes the boundaries of contemporary music as we know it. "January Never Dies" stands out as a testament to Balming Tiger's ability to redefine the scene, earning it my well-deserved recognition as the standout album of the year.

A-Nish's Pick: AGUST D - D-DAY

This album by Agust D aka Min Yoongi was the perfect blend of different genres. It was personal and raw. In 'Amygdala', the rapper did not hesitate to show his vulnerable side to the world and tell the story of his struggles. Songs like 'Life Goes On' make you feel at ease but emotional at the same time. It is such a diverse album that talking about each song will take a long time. A masterpiece, it should be called.

ean1994's Pick: Jungkook - Golden

The various genres that Jungkook was able to relay through this album truly show his versatility as a singer. Every song is catchy and wonderful to listen too. A golden album from the golden maknae.

Janie-Reign's Pick: NewJeans - Get Up

Search for anything related to 'NewJeans' on any portal, and you will probably find more information and material about these girls and their artistry than on several releases or even companies combined. There isn't a branch in popular culture that they haven't touched, from endorsements in beauty, fashion, technology, to collaborations with international film stars and e-gaming. But the one thing that always brings me back to NewJeans is their holistic album production. Still to this day, spearheaded by Min Hee Jin, a NewJeans comeback is never just one element—it is an entire package that comes with a genre-crossing tracklist and song durations, like "Get Up," that bend conventional rules and bring about a mature collection of sounds and visuals for all ages. I say "visuals" because albums from NewJeans are never simply about the sound. The physical materials that comprise the album production and the concept are works of their own, such as the physical design and the adaptation of Powerpuff Girls, that aren't separate but are supportive of the music production.

Jia-Lin's Pick: TNX - Love Never Dies

Embarking on the journey through TNX's 2nd mini album 'Love Never Dies' album was nothing short of a captivating rollercoaster. In what might sound like a cliché, this collection of songs perfectly encapsulates the tumultuous emotions of teenage heartbreak. Despite the years since my teenage years, this album served as a comforting companion as I navigated a new chapter of my life in a foreign land.

optimusnins Pick: Jinyoung - Chapter 0: WITH

GOT7’s JINYOUNG was the last of the Sevens to release his solo album and despite being so busy stealing hearts, acting, and being a supportive GOT7 member, he still has the time to write all of the songs on the album. The release offers listeners so much variety, from emotional ballads to groovy tracks, all with just 5 songs, and every single one of them is extremely enjoyable. JINYOUNG is an extremely talented all-rounder, and it was truly remarkable how he was able to paint a story through his songwriting. The variety of the tracks on this release showcased not only his composition skills but also his exceptional singing ability and his vocal tone.

Sophie-Ha's Pick: D.O - Expectation

The essence of being a remarkable singer lies in the capacity to convey authentic emotions and allow the audience to genuinely connect with the lyrical essence of a song. EXO's D.O. has always stood out as one of the rare vocalists who possesses this invaluable gift. His second EP 'Expectation,' which was released this September, offered an in-depth dive into his vocal talent.

Hannah's Pick: Stray Kids - ROCK STAR

It's a bit different from what you'd expect of an album called 'Rock Star', but I love the different styles of music this album gave us with the signature Stray Kids sound. While I love all their albums, this was a no-skip album for me.

Sohnji's Pick: NewJeans - Get Up

NewJeans' "Get Up" was an absolute standout for me in 2023, firmly securing its spot as my favorite album of the year. What really sets this album apart is its remarkable consistency in musical style and artistic vision. They have a great ability to create music that resonates with a wide audience and make it feel relatable.

Rika-Go's Pick: TREASURE - Reboot

"REBOOT" is the second full-length album by TREASURE, which has undeniably become my favorite musical journey of 2023. From the rap unit's track "G.O.A.T" featuring the legendary artist Lee Young Hyun to "THE WAY TO" by the vocal unit, the album is a masterful blend of infectious melodies, dynamic beats, and the members unparalleled vocal and rap performances. Each of the album's ten tracks transports listeners to an enchanting realm of musical wonder.

Sofia-Sayson's Pick: KISS OF LIFE - Kiss Of Life

Most songs grow on me over time, and it's rare for one to impress me on the very first listen, and KISS OF LIFE did it — not only with one but six tracks with their self-titled debut album. What made me check them out back in July was the fact that the members have incredibly good backgrounds in the industry already. As soon as I decided to give 'KISS OF LIFE' a listen, I was impressed. I knew from that moment that they would make it big, considering the quality of the songs they have. Their songs are exactly to my taste, and I love how well-prepared and unique their debut was. The members have their solo songs (and music videos), and each fits them well. They made a perfect choice to put "Shhh," "Bye My Neverland," "Sugarcoat," "Countdown," "Kitty Cat," and "Play Love Games" together on one album. Even after they made their first comeback with 'Born to be XX,' I'm still listening to 'KISS OF LIFE,' especially "Sugarcoat." They definitely have built a strong start, and I can't wait to hear more from them. One of the most impactful K-Pop debuts.

Germaine-Jay's Pick: NewJeans - Get Up

NewJeans surprised a lot of people this year. I appreciated that this album wasn't something I expected to hear from a new girl group. I think NewJeans are part of the next wave of K-pop idols, and their music reflects that.

Dani-Dee's Pick: Jungkook - Golden

Ever since Jungkook released his first pop cover online, it seems like every K-pop fan has been waiting for the day he could release a solo album, and 'Golden' definitely did not disappoint. The sequential releases of the album's singles "Seven (feat. Latto)," "3D (feat. Jack Harlow)," and "Standing Next To You" were probably the biggest highlights of the back half of 2023 for me, as each one showed a different side of his identity as a solo pop star. My favorite B-side changes every time I listen to the album, but right now, "Yes Or No" is in heavy Spotify rotation for me.

Susan's Pick: iKON - Take Off

I mean, it just doesn't get any better than singing along to "Driving Slowly" on a morning drive, and if "Never Forget You" isn't the perfect rendition of that classic, YG-style R&B pop ballad that we love, then I know nothing about K-Pop. Yunhyeong's solo was a fun little surprise, and Junhoe's rich voice wrapped up this album so nicely. Freedom sure does sound nice!

Paul's Pick: Paul Blanco - Thanks For Nothing

Paul Blanco's latest album continues the tradition of excellence we've come to expect from his releases. With each song, he showcases his signature smooth vocals, effortlessly blending rhythm and emotion in a way that will captivate you. It's clear that his artistry deserves widespread recognition. As he hones his unique sound and continues to produce such high-quality music, it's only a matter of time before he garners the larger following that his talent warrants. This album, like all his others, is an absolute must-listen.

KG's Pick: Epik High - Strawberry

Epik High's been slaying the music game for 22 years now (yeah, time flies and I feel old), and they're still killing it with their drops. 'Strawberry' is yet another addition to their legacy, following the tried and true formula of those slick beats and the sharp, witty rhymes of Tablo and Mithra Jin that we all live for. They're serving lines like "My MBTI is DGAF," and the wordplay is still top-notch. So whether you've been riding with them from the jump or you're just tuning in, 'Strawberry' proves once again that Epik High is the most creative group in Korean music history. I just wish it was longer.

V-Layover

The transitions from song to song felt smooth. It pretty much felt just like the title entailed.I mostly listened to it while driving or cleaning.
