IU reps reveal their plans of taking legal action against perpetrators responsible for spreading false rumors about their artist

IU's representatives revealed their plans of taking strong legal action against the perpetrators responsible for spreading false rumors about IU.

On August 7 KST, EDAM Entertainment announced that they are in the process of filing a criminal complaint against those responsible for spreading malicious rumors about IU.

EDAM Entertainment stated, "We filed a complaint with the Songpa Police Station in Seoul back in May against those who spread malicious rumors online involving false claims that IU is a North Korea spy and more, on charges of defamation based on false rumors. The investigator is having great difficulty proceeding with the investigation as the defendant has refused to comply until now, for nearly three months after we submitted the complaint. In response, our legal representatives are urging the investigation to be sped up by submitting additional documents."

They added, "Back in February of this year, we understood the seriousness of our artists' reputation being damaged by rumors of plagiarism spread by [anonymous] writers of online community forum posts. Following this, we gathered more than 1,700 pieces of data and filed the first part of our lawsuit, and in March of this year we sued around 58 people on charges of defamation." In addition, they wrote, "On March 6, we worked with the Bangbae Police Station in Seoul to file a lawsuit against 60 people who had written and posted inappropriate things about IU, on charges of violating the Secual Violence Punishment Act."

Back in May, IU was embroiled in a plagiarism controversy, which was quickly denied by IU's agency, and even accused of being a North Korean spy

60 People?!? Good, they all need to know that they can't get away with doing things like that, and others need to know that posting malicious lies about an artist is liable to land them in big trouble.

.

I don't understand why they do it, what kind of kick do they get by posting rubbish like that?

.

It was about time that the agencies started taking action to tame the denizens of the net, I hope they're very successful and publicise the result widely.

That's really great to hear. However, it's a bit disappointing that the law enabling prosecution exists only in Korea, meaning only individuals with Korean nationality can file complaints. It's unfortunate that people of other countries' nationalities cannot do the same. If individuals of different nationalities could also file complaints, there might have been a substantial number of people facing legal actions. Just looking at platforms like Allkpop or Reddit, considering Korean law, there could be a significant number of individuals who could be subject to prosecution without a doubt.
