Shout-out:

allkpop: Congratulations on your new single "Juliet"! Could you please tell us more about the single? How does it feel to greet everyone with a new pop ballad track?

AleXa: First and foremost, thank you for the congratulations! Secondly, I wrote the lyrics and composed I'd say 95% of the song myself, so this is definitely a very self-made piece that I've released. I definitely sat down and had a hard time thinking about what I should write the lyrics about, and it just rounded up all coming to me. Then in a span of, say, 20 minutes or an hour, I had the melody and the lyrics figured out. And then I felt it was this is what the song should be, sent it off to the producer and we agreed. There are several versions of the song that also came out. We just wanted to give people a different variety of flavors to dip into and see what people like.

allkpop: "Juliet" is inspired by the classic story 'Romeo and Juliet.' Speaking of stories, plays, and movies, are you like a bookworm or a movie person? Do you have any movies or books you've read or been reading/watching lately, something you would want to recommend to anyone?

AleXa: Well, I'm kind of ashamed to say that I'm not as much of a bookworm as I used to be. I used to love reading for leisure but as I got older and have been employed, I have less time for myself because of my job, I don't read quite as much. But movies, that's definitely more my ally. Not sure if I'd recommend it to all the readers because it is a bit mature and has violent content, but I do love the 'Hellraiser' series. It's a horror movie. There are 9 of them. I just love that series a lot.

allkpop: The song has so many versions. What made you decide to include these different versions of the song, and what's your favorite among them?

AleXa: Out of all the remixes, aside from the original, of course, I'd say my favorite version is the Spanish version. The way that came about is back when I was on tour last year, I had such a warm welcome from Puerto Rico, and I've always had a really good buzz going on in Latin America, I guess, when it comes to my music releases and so I thought why not do something for my Spanish-speaking fans and do a Spanish version of "Juliet" over a Bachata beat. One of my friends from an American song contest, her name is Ale. She's representing Florida. She actually wrote the lyrics for the Spanish version, so I'm really really grateful to her for her wonderful Spanish interpretation of the lyrics.

allkpop: How would you describe this new single of yours? How do you think this single differs from your past releases?

AleXa: First and foremost, "Juliet" is a full-English song. I've released English versions before, and "TATTOO" was also an English release. But "Juliet" is the first song I've completely written and composed myself like it's been 100% just me behind the scenes doing it. So, that makes it very special to me. Also, the fact that it's more of a storytelling song rather than things like bomb, revolution, or extra - those are just very upbeat dance songs, but this is more of a storytelling format. I think that's what diversifies this a bit from my past releases.

allkpop: You took part in the creation of "Juliet"! How is the feeling?

AleXa: Honestly, I'm just so elated. I'm just so happy to have my hand in the mix and help create "Juliet," because as someone who is not just a singer, but, I guess, another term is artist, I love to have my play in whenever it comes to the music that I make and that I promote. So I'm very grateful that the company entrusted me to create this song and I was just so ready for it to be released. I was waiting, I was so excited for the release day and the fact that it's now out in the world. I'm just very happy.

allkpop: What is your writing style like?

AleXa: Some people say that melody comes first, and some people say lyrics come first. For me, it's honestly both but when I sit down and write a song, I tend to think of the melody first and then I write lyrics that go with it. Or, on the flip side, I'll think of the lyrics I want to use, and then I have to come up with the melody that will match those lyrics into the instrumental I have provided.

allkpop: Recently, I interviewed JUST B and asked them about your collaboration single 'JUST Be with you Pt.1.' They said that they were always thinking of collaborating with you after seeing your great performance and skills. How does it feel to be looked up to by idols in this industry?

AleXa: I think it's such a sweet and just kind thing to hear you know. I remember when I was promoting "Xtra," that's when JUST B debuted with their song "Damage" and I remember seeing their stage performance and I was impressed by them as performers. With the way that we ended up collaborating on the track together and filming a music video together, it was very fortuitous, shall I say. It was just a very fun time and I'm very grateful that those kids who see me as a cool sunbaenim, a cool senior, and I'm grateful they wanted to collaborate with me. I would love to collaborate with them again if given the opportunity.

allkpop: Speaking of collaborations, do you have any artists in mind, in or out of K-Pop, you'd like to work with in the future?

AleXa: Oh, wow. If I'm gonna go with one artist outside K-pop, I think I'd like to collaborate with Ashnikko. I'm kind of obsessed with her, it's unhealthy. And if we're gonna go with [an artist] in K-pop, I don't know whether it's for a song or a stage, just for a performance, but I'd like to collaborate with Ten from NCT

allkpop: Is there something or perhaps advice that you've learned or heard from your colleagues, co-artists, or maybe fans that you keep until now?

AleXa: I don't know if there's a specific word of advice but when it comes to the different performances or song collaborations I had, I think the important thing is you're able to be physically there with the same person and you're not just recording in different studios on opposite sides of the world. But if you're actually able to be on stage with this person or to shoot a music video together, it's just to make sure you have good chemistry and then you communicate. Because once you understand the other artist, they could understand you more, then the magic just happens, I guess.

allkpop: Not only you're a good singer but also a good actress! It was recently announced that you've been cast in the American animated series 'Ghosts of Ruin'! Do you have a special technique, your own method for analyzing lines or stage directions?

AleXa: Thank you! When it comes to screen acting and voice acting, they're very different worlds. When it comes to screen acting, I have a musical theatre background, and in a musical theatre, you tend to have to exaggerate over the top because you're on a stage and the back of the auditorium has to see you. But for the screen acting, you have to tone it down, make it a bit smaller, because the camera's gonna catch every little thing you do. So I have to focus on toning down my energy and making my movements smaller and more natural, less theatrical, which is kind of hard for me because I'm a very theatrical person in myself. But with voice acting, I think it's just when I read the character description and I look at the script, I just come up with voices in my head, read the script out loud, and see what sounds correct, then when I find the voice that works, I stick with it.

allkpop: How do you usually unwind after a long tiring day?

AleXa: I would like to say that I typically go home and take off all my makeup because we wear a lot of makeup. Then I definitely probably sit down and watch a cooking show or watch one of my favorite movies just to unwind and turn off my brain for the day.

allkpop: Do you have anything else to say to anyone who is reading this interview?

AleXa: I just want to say thank you so much for all the love you showed to "Juliet" and her several remixes. I love seeing you guys participate in the dance challenges on TikTok, doing your creative videos and makeups that follow the looks I had in "Juliet." I just hope I can see you all again very soon. Hopefully on a stage next time in person. Thank you and please keep waiting for me.

I like her voice and rarely pay attention to lyric, but this line jumped out, ♫ We were Romeo and Juliette if Romeo were never in love.♫ That's hurt.
