ITZY's 'Checkmate' exceeds 700,000 copies in pre-orders

According to JYP Entertainment on July 15 KST, ITZY's 5th mini album 'Checkmate' has recorded a whopping 720,665 copies in pre-orders, proving the growing popularity of the global girl group.

With this, 'Checkmate' has become the 4th album ever by a K-Pop girl group to surpass 700,000 copies in pre-orders, joining aespa's 'Girls', BLACKPINK's 'THE ALBUM', and TWICE's 'Formula of Love: O+T=<3'. In addition, 'Checkmate' now ranks among the top 3 girl group albums with the highest number of pre-orders recorded.

Meanwhile, 'Checkmate', which features "SNEAKERS" as the album's title track will be released today (July 15) at 1 PM KST.

These are pre-orders for stock, right? Meaning the albums will go to stores and then have to be sold to customers before they become "real" sales? I know it's still an achievement for the group and it means they're doing well, it's just that the articles on here can be confusing. You'll see one article saying a group got X number of pre-orders and then later an article talking about their first-week sales and the amount is much lower. This could be explained better.
