Lawyer will file a complaint with Seoul Central District Prosecutor's Office on behalf of fans against Mnet + Produce X 101

24 July, 2019

Lawyer Gu Hye Min will file a complaint with the Seoul Central District Prosecutor's Office on behalf of fans, next week against Mnet and Produce X 101 for obstruction of business via fraud and rigging

They cite violations of Article 5 (Public Responsibility in Broadcasting) and Article 6 (Fairness in Public Interest of Broadcasting) as some of the reasons

They're looking at other areas of malpractice too potentially, such as illegal solicitation between companies and Mnet

In the United States, there was a federal investigation into early quiz shows circa 1950. Similar accusations were made—the producers sold the personalities and stories of the contestants for ratings, while the show itself was rigged. They controlled the trajectory of the game, and while the contestants were in on it, they were promised a certain amount of money and/or air time on other programs (which didn't always happen). People went to prison and laws changed after that case. It'll be interesting to see if this lawsuit leads to anything.
