IZ*ONE becomes the K-pop girl group with the best first-day single sales in Japan

IZ*ONE

IZ*ONE made a new record with 'I Want to Say I Like You.'

On February 6, the project girl group from 'Produce 48' released their Japanese debut single. On the first day of release, 'I Want to Say I Like You' topped Oricon's single album chart with 193,469 copies sold.

This makes IZ*ONE the K-pop girl group with the best first-day single sales in Japan. Previously, the title was held by TWICE with 'Wake Me Up,' which sold 129,275 copies on the first day.

In overall record counting in singles by all K-pop artists, 'I Want to Say I Like You' is the 3rd best first-day sales following BTS who took both 1st and 2nd place with 'Fake Love/ Airplane pt 2' (327,342 copies) and 'MIC Drop/DNA/Crystal Snow' (269,861 copies) respectively.

Congratulations!

In all honesty, they should concentrate on Japan and less on the Korean market. After all - unlike what the headline says, they are not exclusively a Kpop group - they are also an official and legitimate Jpop group under the 48/46 Group banner when promoting in Japan, and it seems like the Japanese market will show them 100x more love than Korea will, and provide far more profit for the Korean and Japanese companies producing and managing them.

I disagree, they did very well with their Korean debut and are very popular in Korea. I believe they will promote more in Korea but still a lot in Japan obviously. But I see what you're saying.

IZ*ONE has the advantage of not being an exclusively Kpop/Korean group, so they might as well take advantage of that. The big money is in Japan, not Korea. Korea is small potatoes compared to Japan, and the only reason your standard kpop groups even bother with Korea after making it big in Japan is because they would be burned at the stake in the Korean press and public if they didn't. And let's not forget about the rest of the world has plenty of eager fans ready to open their wallets. Why waste more time than absolutely necessary in a relatively small market when you can kill it in a far bigger market?

Japan is great as a cash cow but they also need to increase their international following as well. that's something can only be achieved by kpop market.

No surprised at all, 80 percent of their fans feel the need to buy a minimum of 12 discs, the promotion level is top because this group is part of Akimoto franchise.

I can see why they are so popular. They are gold on variety shows and their vlive appearances as well. Their songs are solid both Korean and Japanese, and the amount of material they have released already and new dances learnt is amazing. It's quite astonishing given they have only been around for a few months or so. I have to say I was reluctant to be a fan initially because some of my picks from Produce 48 didn't get in but now I'm always hanging for their next variety show or vlive appearance or song release. They are entertaining! IZ*ONE fighting!

They already have built in fan base just because of the reality show and the three popular Japanese members with their own fan base. Nevertheless that's really good. They are just beginning and will get much bigger in Japan... and soon the end also...but in the beginning currently ;)

Like it or not Izone is a kpop girl group that debuted not long ago they were chosen by Korean people in a survival program p48 which a collaboration of korean trainees and member of akb48 girls and very apparent that this group is made to penetrate both Korea and Japan music market and the rest of the world.

cause they actualy debute with an original japanese song and not just a japanese version of their korean hit. not to mention the song have a very jpop feel to it as well. I like the direction they are taking for the girls in japan.

I think the show as a whole as very controversial, due to the unexpected final line up...It was shocking that some girls didn't make the final cut, like the girl from Pledis. So, things like this made the show questionable - of couse that we are not that inoccent to think that companies don't influence the final resoult - but what I'm traying to say is that the girls from Iz One are not as charismatic as the girls from IOI, they haven't cativated korean audience yet, whereas in Japan they already- have strong names in the group, so It is going to be easier for them to becamo huge there ( They problablly already are).

What? Their Korean debut sold really well, I haven't seen anyone crying sajaegi yet so presumably someone is buying their music. It's not really shocking that some girls didn't end up in the group, there were only 12 places to go around after all. Lots of people made a lot of noise about certain favourites failing to make the final lineup but some of those people probably never even voted and others are probably fans of the group anyway now. I.O.I was special but IZ*ONE has a good mix of talented performers and likable personalities. People whined about I.O.I's final lineup too actually. Same with Wanna One. All very successful acts.

It wouldn't shock me if these voting shows were manipulated, but you've got to wonder how much the show producers would bother when the whole point of the show is to build a group the public will take action to get behind...

imagine their debut sales numbers if they didn't have a reality show finale AND the AKB48 girls involved

since when were they a kpop group?

They aren't, but some like the article author assume just because the group is 3/4 Korean that they are automatically a kpop group. In Korea they are a kpop group managed by Koreans, and in Japan they are a Jpop group managed by Japanese. This concept is still hard for kpoppers to twist their little heads around.

They live in Korea they are kpop. Most Kpop acts are managed by a different company in Japan.

Avex ect.

The thing a lot of kpoppers aren't getting is that almost all music sales in Japan are in physical albums - $18-$20 CDs/DVDs. So when IZ*ONE sells 200,000 units, that is about $4 million in sales - in 2 days. AKB48 can make $30 million or more on the first day of release. No kpop group even comes close to those numbers.

Wait so are they a jpop group also? Why are they only focusing on Japan mostly tho? I love their song la vie en rose. I feel like if they do too much of jpop it’s gonna be turn into girls with high school outfits and very very very cutesy outfits. I love cute concepts but I want them to do something different. I’m not a huge fan of jpop. It’s just not my type. Although I liked bdz and I kind of like candy pop by twice. But that’s like the two I only listen to. Even if they turn more into a jpop group I’m still happy for them and wish them the best.

Jpop and Jpop girl groups are incredibly diverse though. Even if you just check out the big long-running groups like Morning Musume and everything under the 48 brand (which is probably a good clue as to where IZ*ONE's sound might go in Japan), they do a variety of styles and they aren't wearing cutesy outfits any more than Kpop girl groups on average. If IZ*ONE does 'younger' concepts it'll be because of the ages of the members and not Japanese promotions. Check out their Japanese debut MV - the song might not be to your taste but aesthetically it's already way more mature than their Kpop debut.

Congratulations to IZ*ONE!

Oricon chart count only local sales shipped inside Japan. Not include online export cd shop like CDJAPAN, Yesaisa etc. That mean many sales not count due to export order from global fans (Include Korean fans).

I also order 3CD and send to my friend's house in Japan for count in Oricon chart. Can't wait my friend send those cd to me. X3.

anyone actually surprised of how this "K-POP" girl group catering to Japanese market heavily by bringing AKB48's name and the pedophilia concept sexuallized underage girls?

Do they forget how Japanese otakus are like, buying albums just for the fan meeting vouches or cards (to hoard or resale online) and not give a shit about the music?

Bravo, IZ'One, Bravo~! Won't be long when IZ'One release swimsuit cards or dolls for the otakus, then the sales will go even higher

Music? what Music?
