JYP Entertainment's new girl group reported to have filmed MV

AKP STAFF

It looks like JYP Entertainment's new girl group will be debuting soon.

On the 14th, JYP Entertainment confirmed, "The new girl group has filmed theirMV. They are preparing hard, and it's unconfirmed when they will debut." While there is no confirmation on when they will debut or who will be part of the group, many fans are guessing that Lee Chaeryung (from 'SIXTEEN'), Shin Ryujin (from 'MIXNINE'), and Hwang Yeji (from 'The Fan').

JYP Entertainment has a history of making a mega-hit out of all their girl groups such as Wonder Girlsmiss A, and TWICE. Are you looking forward to the new group?

The difficulty for JYPE would be how to keep their two girl groups conceptually separate from one another as they promote simultaneously. Wonder Girls and Miss A didn't overlap as the former was clearly retro-themed while the latter followed the sexy trend. But TWICE has the market cornered on cute-and-catchy, yet they are now going to be the older/senior group. Usually, the older group would move onto more mature concepts while the younger group takes over the cuteness factor. But it doesn't make sense to throw away TWICE's biggest strength. And as they grow older, TWICE could conceivably move on to slightly more sexy / girl crush concepts.

So where is the new group going to fit in? Given the members likely to be part of it, it does make sense that they shouldn't go for the cute concept, but rather start with girl-crush, maybe hip-hop concepts and go from there. I don't think they should go for "baddest bitch" concepts like 2NE1 did - mostly because it would conflict with JYPE's overall company culture as the "nice girls/guys next door". But maybe they could follow early KARA's footsteps and go heavy with the hip hop and dance-pop electrosynth sounds. Then again, Wonder Girl's "Irony" and TWICE's "Like Ooh-Ahh" doesn't fill me with confidence that JYPE knows how to build upon a good hip-hop girl group concept. (Not bad songs for debut, but both groups radically shifted in direction after that...)
