Big Hit Entertainment confirms registration of names 'BTS' and 'ARMY'

(Bangtan Boys) BTS

On December 4, Big Hit Entertainment responded to various news outlet reports stating that the label has registered for trade mark rights to the names "BTS" and "ARMY"

Big Hit shared, "It's true that we are actively attempting to acquire trade mark rights to various names related to our artist." The label refrained from revealing additional details. According to the Korea International Property Rights Information Service (KIPRIS), Big Hit registered the English version names "BTS" and "ARMY" for trade mark rights in July of last year. The label already owns trade mark rights to "?????" in Korean, as well as "Bangtan boyz"

Meanwhile, BTS will be spending a busy end to their year with appearances at the '2018 MAMA', 'SBS Gayo Daejun', and more.

i'm sure they can trademark BTS but can they trademark ARMY? maybe i'm just really ignorant on trademarking so someone help me. because the word army is actually a term for people in the army and the army itself. will they be able to trademark that?

trademarks are for the use of words and ideas for specific genres/industries. Example: King/Candy crush has the trademark of "saga" and "candy" for video games. Big hits trademark would be for music & merch; so people could still be part of the army, video games and movies could still be made about the army. But if another band started using "ARMY" (in korea, they're only registering in korea) then Big hits could stop them.

Yh, they'll never get ARMY, it's too universal. BTS is more likely.

There's different categories for trademarks. For BTS and ARMY, it would likely be for merchandise, which wouldn't interfere with the miltary and stuff. Anyways, the miltary usually has its own trademark like the Canadian Armed Forces or the United States Armed Forces.

This is not good news.. If BTS ever will want to go their own way (like SHINHWA) they will see similar problem like for example T-ara...

Don’t companies sometimes use trademarking as a way to get a hold on the group name and maintain control of it? So while yes, it’s good that they’re taking steps to protecting a groups name from being used by others but, it also means if the group chooses to leave the company one day, not saying BTS will since they all just renewed their contracts, they can’t use the name anymore. And I may be wrong on this since I don’t know the fine print of trademarking but it also may means if BTS chooses to part ways with Big Hit, everything produced under BTS, like song copyrights and profits, stays with the company. So Trademarking has kind of become a way for companies to try and keep a group from leaving. Like how Cube has a hold of Beast so now the members promote as Highlight. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing Big Hit is trying to trademark BTS and ARMY since it does help protect the name and prevent other people from using or selling merch under it but it’s just a thought.

It's probably to prevent other Artist/Group to call themself like that or that another fandom is called like that.

They can't make People stop to us BTS for Behind the Scene or Army for those who work for the military.

i'm pretty sure they trademarked the acronym "A.R.M.Y", just "army" makes no sense. But does this mean youll get sued if you use "bts" for behind the scenes or something?

Yes. So you would have to pay in order to use "BTS" name. Or get sued. This is honestly, pretty fucked up. However, BTS is an acronym ... There are millions named BTS. I don't know how this is going to work exactly. The name ARMY is 98% not going to happen.

For a second I thought this article was about Big Hit Ent going to register for Copyright of BTS and ARMY. Which would never have gone through, for either BTS and ARMY.

It's good to see the trade mark though. It could mean more money for BTS members (if Big Hit are kind enough, which I think they are) on sales of merchandise and other BTS/ARMY products etc. Good move.

Are they trademarking the word ARMY or the acronym? Because ARMY is an acronym for Adorable Representative MC for Youth.

the words ARMY and BTS are not gonna be easy to be trade marked globally!! (impossible to be honest) cause the anachronism for BTS is BEHIND THE SCENES which is literally used by thousands through out the day. and the word ARMY is already trade marked by the actual ARMY organisation.. Unless korea has a different trade mark system, where only the people who use those names will have to pay the fine but outside of korea i.e America i highly doubt it they'll approve it. it'll be an uproar before they do and most likely will reflect negatively on the boys! imagine getting sued for using the words the words ARMY and BTS!! which are commonly used. that's like rihanna trade marking navy and suing the actual navy for using it!!! Let me tell you this now.. ITS NOT GONNA HAPPEN!!!!

i really hope that nothing stupid occurs if people start using bts for behind the scenes as it has been used for like ever. it was so awkward on twitter when they had the emoji and people had their behind the scenes stuff slapped with the groups logo meanwhile it had nothing to do with bts at all. this is going to be a mess i just have this feeling

lol @ trademarking ARMY when it's been actually used as a fanbase nickname for a major international popstar for years now...

"BTS" is fine although I guess "ARMY" does require some attention. I mean, it's not like BigHit totally came up with the name out of nothing. I mean, ARMY sounds cool, but it is the military originally, so I guess that BigHit needs to check to see if ARMY really is okay to use.

I just hope this doesn't create too much drama or we'll be having some serious problems

they'll get their copyrights related to music in Korea. But I hope they don't try this elsewhwere since both terms are non-exclusive and already oft-used within the entertainment industry: 'BTS' will always mean 'behind the scenes' foremost, and so many articles refer to 'fan army' as a euphemism for any fandom.

So, they will never own ARMY , as any iteration of the name is military-based. To own the name ARMY in the english language would make them be able to sue governments. ARMY is a branch of any military. BTS is an acronym, so they would more than likely need to specify what they're owning as there are multiple acronyms for BTS overall.

So the chances they'll own either are extremely low.

Okay this is too fucking far. They have no right to trademark an acronym and a word that have been around even before they were fucking born. Seriously. This is bullshit. Big Hit what the fuck? You don't own those words, you din't invent those words. They aren't in your position to trademark.
