'Fantastic Beasts' social media account receives backlash for posting the wrong Asian actress' photo for Soo Hyun (Claudia Kim)

Soo Hyun (Claudia Kim)
The official UK Twitter account (@BeastsMovieUK) for 'Fantastic Beasts' is receiving backlash for posting a wrong photo of Soo Hyun (Claudia Kim).

On November 14, 'Fantastic Beasts' shared photos from the premiere event. The caption names Claudia Kim, however, the photo shows Japanese actress Mirei Kiritani

Both Claudia Kim and Mireri Kitani wore long, black dresses to the event, but many are finding the mistake rude and racist.

A Twitter user called out 'Fantastic Beasts' and stated, "You considered two people the same just because they are Asian women. This is RACISM. You are an official account of UK. You shouldn't act like this. Have some RESPECT these two."

The tweet gained over 2.3K retweets as of this writing.

Meanwhile, the 'Fantastic Beasts' UK Twitter account deleted the tweet and posted again with the correct photo of Claudia Kim.

Hmm it does seem a bit racist.... the person who is responsible for their social media accounts probably thinks all Asians look alike.

"it does seem a bit racist" "probably thinks all Asians look alike." Mmmm yeah, that's a bit racist.

Thats pretty understable tho.

as an asian its also hard to differentiate western people. they are look similar with pale skin and blonde hair, not all of them but most of them look the same in asian eyes.

asian can tell the different between korean, japanese, chinese, and south east asian. but western people think they look the same.

and we as asian can't differentiate between american, australian, and europian.

but as an official account of a movie that she is in. its a bit too much for not to recognize one of their actress.

didn't jk rowling say how she'd put minorities in roles in the film and wanted to support diversity. And then you find out all of the minorities play really minor secondary characters. Talk about tokenism. Like if she hadn't said anything no one would care.

Exactly.... Even when she said she never had a particular ethnicity in mind when writing Hermione when the stage play received backlash for casting the character as a black woman. If she really didn't have a certain look in mind for Hermione then why did they cast an actress that fit the description of the book character to a T..? Most of the other main characters had fit the book description very well too. I felt like she just said that to pander to her black fanbase and it seemed so stupid, I've read all the books and she makes it very obvious when a character is not white, and she always describes her characters with detail, so I had a hard time understanding why she would only do it with this one (major) character..... I know I am ranting but yeah, I hate when creatives do this. If you want more diversity in films/books then just do it! Don't make hints or say you would've liked to have more xyz looking characters/actors for browny points!

Okay, calm down people. It could be just a dumb mistake so please don't go labeling people "racists."

Funny how that "dumb mistake" never happens to white people.

Oh, you'll be amazed with the amount of "dumb mistakes" people make towards Cauasian celebs. Just Google it, and you'll find tons of stories. Plus, this is nothing compared to what a newspaper in New Zealand did. Instead of a tribute paid to Stan Lee, they accidentally paid tribute to Spike Lee.

You can't generalize this to all Korean people. Secondly, the people in this video are not in charge of official twitter accounts for movies . The twitter account should know their own cast members.

people who dont watch asian shows all the time really makes this mistake..does that make it racist? no. its a fact that its easy to make such a mistake if youre not used to it. its just embarassing and unprofessional if you are using an official account

Racism...? If you don't see people of the same race often then you will have a hard time telling them apart. This is science. Look it up. There is nothing racist about it. People are so quick to label everything as racist even when it isn't.

This isn't just some random person. This is the official account for the movie and they can't tell their own cast members apart.

do you honestly think the person/team in charge of the twitter account has any contact or interaction with the cast? i doubt they are told exactly what each person is even wearing to big events. Its an easy mistake to make yet obviously something that shouldn't have been made or at least apologised for.

No, but the person in charge of the account has seen countless photos from the film and of the cast members. They should've known, I mean those two women don't look a like AND they were wearing completely different dresses.

It doesn't make the PIC a racist, though. it just makes him/her look unprofessional. What's worse is there's no apology. They just deleted the Tweet, made a new one, then made a bunch of new Tweets to cover it up. That's just unacceptable.

While I agree the whole incident is blown out of proportion, the person who screwed up was very unprofessional and disrespectful. After all, the movie already got a lot of flak for casting Claudia Kim as Nagini. Mistakes like these could've been avoided had s/he been more careful.

Piece of shit all the westerners !!! Not being able to distinguish Claudia Kim beauty!!! And comparing our Claudia with Japanese whore !!! It's too much. Before they were asking why Claudia speaks so fluently English. Do they know how we Koreans are clever? Son of bitches westerners using our cars our computers and technologies and still considering us lower race. Our artists need to stop working with racists westreners and come back to home country !

Not all westerners are racist. I hope you know that. It was rude and racist, and the person who posted it was wrong. But don't have one person change your view on all westerns. Lots are very nice and against racism. I hope you know that. Also no need to bring down the Japanese here. It's not their fault it's messed up!
