The debut of the 'MIXNINE' winners has been canceled. Woo Jin Young's agency Happyface Entertainment confirmed the reports on May 2. The reason for the cancelation is conflicts with the contract term. YG Entertainment suggested extending the contract to 3 years, instead of the originally announced term of 4 months. The offer was overwhelming to many agencies. Signing a 3-year contract with YG Entertainment means the idol will be promoting in the 'MIXNINE' group for nearly half of their home agency's contract term (idol's contract with an agency is usually 7 years). The inability to come to a fair agreement on the contract is supposedly why their debut is canceled.
Netizens aren't buying the explanation. In fact, many viewers are angry at YG Entertainment and its head Yang Hyun Suk for irresponsibly "throwing out" the trainees. Some even believe YG Entertainment suggested the long contract term on purpose, knowing that most agencies will not be able to accept such terms.
Why would YG Entertainment do that on purpose? The infamous low viewer ratings of 'MIXNINE' may explain it. The viewer ratings for the show significantly dropped down to the 0% range. 'MIXNINE' failed to maintain attention and create a hot issue, which means it's probably not a profitable venture.
However, netizens believe the debut of 'MIXNINE' winners should still take place as promised no matter what. The cancelation is not only rude to the trainee winners but also to the viewers who voted and cheered for the trainees.
Comments of anger stated, "This is nonsense. Is this some sort of prank show on the entire nation? Pay me back for my text votes and apologize for deceiving us", "Seriously, this is crazy", "This is too much. How could you crush the dreams of those kids? They must've been so desperate... They must be so upset and angry. They (YG) are so irresponsible", "They played with the dreams of more than 400 trainees, deceived the viewers, and all these reports are coming out but they are hiding, not providing any official statement. They are so cowardly. I thought they would at least get a chance to promote (even though the viewer ratings were low) since the show was on YG's name and I made votes with that hope in mind."
YG Entertainment has yet to provide an official statement on the issue.
