[Drama Review] 'Cheese In The Trap' - Episode 9

We're already at episode 9 of 'Cheese in the Trap'! It's been going by fast because of all the trials and tribulations that Hong Seol and Yoo Jung have faced until now.

We left off the last episode with a heartwarming interaction between Seol and In Ho, encouraging the Seol-Ho stans who are falling even deeper in the SLS trap.

Episode 9 starts off in Seol's dream which foreshadows her upcoming entanglement with Son Min Soo, who knows no boundaries when it comes to personal space. I honestly have to applaud the producers for making the antagonists extremely annoying and destructive, because I have never felt so engaged with a drama like this before.

It's enough that Young Gon is already excessively harassing Seol, but adding on Min Soo, Sang Chul, plus In Ha, in that mix? I'm surprised Seol hasn't exploded sooner.

We do, however, see Seol getting more aggressive and confrontational, starting with Sang Chul who just refuses to do any of the group work and then with Min Soo plagiarizing Seol's report word-for-word.

What I like the most about this drama is the loyalty and the support system that Seol has around her. She not only has her best friend, Bora, to back her up, but Seol also has Eun Taek, Ah Young, Yoo Jung, Hong Jun (younger brother), and finally In Ho.

Though it does seem like Seol is inevitably tilting towards becoming more of a damsel-in-distress K-drama trope, it's always nice to see that she has more than just In Ho and Yoo Jung to lean on.

My favorite scene in this episode is definitely when In Ha mistakes Min Soo for Seol and accidentally (?) trips her over. This is also probably the only time I was able to stand Lee Sung Kyung's version of In Ha as I was screaming (internally) "You go In Ha!!!!" I also love the way In Ha threw away her ice cream without hesitation in order to harass Min Soo with full force.

This is the kind of scene that makes me want to like Lee Sung Kyung's interpretation of In Ha so much because she is bold, without pretense, and beautifully reckless. But then there are moments like when she pesters In Ho about money and spills ramen all over his piano book, fluttering her hands around, that makes me want to slap her silly.

What's even more disappointing is that because filming began months before the drama started airing, Lee Sung Kyung wasn't able to adjust her acting to the viewer's critiques.

The producers did, however, include enough about In Ha's past and her relationship with In Ho for the viewers to better understand her outrageous behavior. Though the flashbacks were brief, I was able to sympathize with In Ha, especially when she was living with her abusive aunt who vented out her anger towards In Ha. It's just difficult to see all of this past Lee Sung Kyung's acting which comes off as a distracting.

Moving on to Yoo Jung and Seol, the couple continues struggling... hard. Of course, they start off all sweet and affectionate in the beginning of the episode. But it wouldn't be 'Cheese in the Trap' if it didn't include a deal-breaking moment between the two. This time, though, things are pretty serious as you see both Seol and Yoo Jung tearing up as Seol tells Yoo Jung that they should take a 'break' to think things through.

As delicate as the relationship already was and as much as I wanted the two to finally stop the cycle of arguing then making up, I was somewhat glad that the two are addressing this particular issue earlier on (we still have at least seven more episodes left, hurrah!).

The fight goes on to it's usual pattern where Seol addresses her issues and Yoo Jung stands there, speechless at what he's hearing.

A part of me hopes that she doesn't forgive Yoo Jung so easily like the other times and stands her ground especially because we already know that Yoo Jung doesn't get punished enough for his insensitive actions.

Though the fight between Yoo Jung and Seol was intense, I liked how serene and still the background is, making it seem like everything around the two has stopped. Though it did seem like a waste to use such a beautiful spot for a fighting scene.

Aaaaand finally, the MVP of this episode goes to In Ho (a.k.a the beautiful bum boy) who, despite getting constantly stressed out by everyone around him, pushes through everything with a smile on his face. Yes, he struggles with his own problems just as much as Seol does, but his optimistic and expressive personality (not to mention his devilishly good looks) brings joy to Seol and the viewers.
