The Mayor of Seoul, Park Won Soon recently visited California back in late September and he was interviewed by San Francisco's The Examiner' where they asked him about his position on gay rights.

Park reportedly said, "I personally agree with the rights of homosexuals. But the Protestant churches are very powerful in Korea. It isn't easy for politicians."

Korea indeed has a large Christian population and has protested against this year's annual gay pride parade. According to Korea's Asan Institute for Policy Studies, in a survey conducted among 1,500 Korean citizens, 78.5% stated that they objected to homosexuality while 21.5% stated that they had little to no objection to it.

Still, there may be hope for Korea's homosexual population, as Park had won re-election with his anti-homophobia campaign.

When asked if he believed Taiwan would be the first Asian country to legalize same-sex marriage, Park responded, "I hope Korea will be the first," seemingly optimistic about the future.
