Days after we have reported about Choi Jin Shil's ashes getting stolen from her burial site, we have some new developments about who might have done it.
Korean police announced today, after going through 2 months of CCTV footage of the burial site, they have discovered the suspect and are working to apprehend him.
The police had went through CCTV footage dated from 27th June to 12th August (before it was struck by lightning) as part of their investigations. The police had hoped to find some clues on the culprit and were rewarded for their hard work. They found a male suspect, around 35 - 50 years old, who had smashed the back of Choi Jin Shil's tombstone, taking away her urn and then driving off in a car. That important footage was taken on the night of 4th August from 9.55pm to 10.58pm. The suspect had the audacity to return a few hours later from 3.36 - 3.41am, taking special care to brush off any signs of damage, cleaning his fingerprints and placing a bouquet of flowers to mask to broken tiles. The caretaker of the burial site didn't notice anything amiss until 2 empty soju bottles were placed next to Choi Jin Shil's tombstone by fans paying their respects.
The police added that the culprit was captured vey clearly on camera, which was just 20m away from Choi Jin Shil's tombstone. He was wearing a cap and had white gloves on, taking over a hour before leaving the scene. And according to the datestamp, the crime wasn't committed between 14 - 15th August as previously reported. It was much earlier in the beginning of August. The police explained that they were just being cautious when releasing the news that the cameras weren't working on the 12th and are now doing their utmost best to apprehend the suspect very soon.
No matter what, we hope that the police can quickly find the culprit and return Choi Jin Shil's ashes to its rightful place as soon as possible.
