Planning to Move to Korea in 2024? Here are 7 Living Tips You'll Need!

AKP STAFF

Considering a move to South Korea in the new year? It's an exciting prospect, but there are some essential living tips you'll want to know before making the big move.

1. Waste Management: South Korea has stringent trash disposal rules. You'll need to purchase specific bags based on the size of your trash and sort your waste meticulously into categories like paper, plastic, food waste, and more. It's a routine that might take some getting used to!

2. Restroom Readiness: Thankfully, it's rare to find these days in South Korea but if you're traveling to a very rural area, you might encounter squat toilets. To use a squat toilet, position yourself over the toilet with your feet on either side, facing the hooded end, and lower into a deep squat. Ensure your clothing is clear of the area. After use, clean yourself with the provided method, whether it be toilet paper, a bidet hose, or a water bucket, and dispose of any waste materials appropriately. Carefully stand up, flush using the mechanism or bucket of water provided, and wash your hands thoroughly.

3. Transportation Cards: Invest in a T-money card. These handy cards are rechargeable and can be used for buses, subways, taxis, and even at convenience stores. They are a real lifesaver when navigating the city!

4. Registration Number: To reserve tickets for movies, festivals, and more, you'll need a residential registration number and a Korean phone number. Make sure to get these sorted quickly after your arrival to enjoy these services.

5. Event Tickets: Getting tickets for popular events can be a competitive affair. For the best chance, use a PC Bang (internet café) for their fast internet. Early preparation is key!

6. Strangers asking Personal Questions: Don't be surprised by direct personal questions from new acquaintances. It's part of socializing in Korea to ask about things like your job, relationship status, or even your blood type!

7. Sharing Culture: Sharing food is common in Korea, and so is double-dipping. It's a sign of community and trust, so jump in and enjoy the communal experience!

1. Carry toilet paper/wet tissue, some washrooms might not have this (some places incheon and seoul)

2. Have reusable bags if you plan on shopping because they charge you extra

3. They are becoming more diverse in sizes but if you are XL and over, prepare some clothes and jacket. They tend to have oversize as style but i don’t know how the fit is

4.when you take the bus, you should tap when you enter a bus and exit a bus.
5. Shop online, cheaper and fast delivery service, coupang or Gmarket
6. Learn Korean! Although things may be written in konglish, you should make effort to learn to read.

7. Make friends with Koreans, they are super kind and helpful

8.if you live in Rural area, many people don’t see foreigners and some people randomly touch your hair, especially old ajummas and grandmas.

9. floor heating is amazing (dry my clothes on the floor) but i would also get a heater blanket for the bed if you want to save. Ondols can get expensive during winter

10. Expect sugar in your foods. A lot of Korean savoury dishes can be sweet.

The thing that really threw me for a loop when I moved to South Korea was how the entire bathroom was the shower, with the drain in the middle of the floor and the rest of the floor subtly inclining for proper drainage. I made a ritual of moving everything inside the medicine cabinet before taking a shower, and I even designated one of my bath towels as just a towel for drying up the floor after a shower, because it would take all day for it to dry otherwise. At the least, it sure made it easy to maintain a clean bathroom!
