On May 12, numerous Niel fan pages closed down after fans supposedly spotted the idol star vacationing with his girlfriend. Various photos of him and the girl at the airport spread across the web, blowing up dating rumors. Niel's label TOP Media has since stepped up to address the rumors and clear up any misunderstandings.

According to CBS, TOP Media denied the rumors on May 13, and stated, "It is true that Niel traveled with 3 others on the 9th, but they are all just friends."
However, many fans claim that they were already well aware of Niel's relationship, but kept it quiet to respect his privacy. Unfortunately, fans started getting angry as Niel and the same girl were continuously captured together multiple times, even though Niel assured fans that he was not dating.
