[Drama Review] 'Pinocchio' - Episode 12

Suzy, Park Shin Hye, Lee Jong Suk, Lee Yu Bi, Yoon Sang Hyun, Kim Young Kwang
We witness the downfall of Cha Ok as the world casts her as the villain of the story. Looks like Dal Po (or now Ki Ha Myeong) and Jae Myeong's operation revenge is carrying out smoothly. Only problem is, I'm not sure if I'm completely on board.

I had a hard time sympathizing with Ha Myeong during this episode. Although Jae Myeong and Ha Myeong certainly earned their moment of triumph when they humiliated Cha Ok on broadcast, it looks like the brothers want her news career to be completely destroyed. As a viewer, I don't entirely agree with that goal, but this just may be due to my personal views on revenge. I understand that Jae Myeong and Ha Myeong are angry at Cha Ok for painting their father as the devil to the public so many years ago and driving their mother to commit suicide. But just as murder is not the answer, I don't think focusing on completely destroying her life is right, either.

I would much rather have Dal Po/Ha Myeong focus on being a good reporter himself--not just relative to Cha Ok--and that the brothers focus on each other, spending whatever time they have to catch up. I also want Ha Myeong to realize that it's not a crime to be happy! I don't think Ha Myeong needed to cut off ties with the family who knew him as Dal Po. I understand that he's thinking of his brother, but shouldn't he think of the people who loved him as their own for so many years, as well? Ha Myeong has done enough by breaking up with In Ha to focus on operation revenge; completely cutting her and her family off seems to be a bit too much.

Watching Yoo Rae make a hate group for Cha Ok made me a bit uncomfortable, as well. The netizens trolling with their photoshopped images of Cha Ok was humorous and very true to life, but when Yoo Rae, one of my favorite characters, took it a step further with her hate group, I wondered if the drama was approving this move. As K-Pop fans, we know how online hate groups work and how they can drive a person over the edge. I know Cha Ok is no innocent victim and in the past, she was hateful herself towards Ha Myeong's family. I just don't want to see our favorite protagonists ever stoop to her level.

This episode wasn't as entertaining as others, but no drama is perfect. 'Pinocchio' still has eight more episodes to go, and I'm sure there's bound to be more surprises as we watch. For this week's episodes, I was thankful for unique characters like Beom Jo and Yoo Rae for the humor they brought to the table. I hope to see more of it!

Highlights:

In Ha continues to show some concern for her mother. The mother-daughter bond liiiives!

I don't know how Cha Ok didn't expect this. Of course Jae Myeong would cause problems for you on air. Do you not remember the kid who blamed you for his mother's death? The kid who threatened you with his father's sharp trophy? The kid whose family you pretty much wrecked?

Well, guess you know now.

What?! I'm sure Jae Myeong would want you to be happy, too, though, right?!

And what about grampa?!? :(

Cruel questions. But I guess that's the job.

Girl, shut up.

Shut down. You were asking for it though, Cha Ok.

Oh daaaaang Beom Jo, you get Suzy as your blind date candidate?! Lucky man! Maybe a future cameo.. coming up..? Eh? Eh?

Wow. You, my good sir, have great self-control.

Has our dear Beom Jo forgotten what it feels like to get slapped by an impact as great as In Ha's high fives?

Well, here's the reminder. A high five to the face.

Just kidding. It's all in his head.

Bro, you can't just tell her not to do her job. She already broke up with you so you can focus on your revenge thang, she shouldn't have to avoid her assignments too.

In Ha basically tells Ha Myeong how much she cares about him in the angriest tone possible.

That chaebol power.

Just a bit.

But Ha Myeong finds it adorable. And so do I.

Dayum. What goes around comes around.

She actually screams this...

...and literally no one in the cafeteria currs. If I were there, I'd be watching and waiting for a 'Jerry Springer' smackdown.

'I Hear Your Voice' cameo! Looks like Jae Myeong is being represented by none other than Lawyer Cha Gwan Woo (Yoon Sang Hyun)! Don't worry Jae Myeong-ah, you're in good hands.
