A Taste of Jeonju: The Culinary dishes the City is Famous For

Jeonju is a beautiful city in South Korea, known for being a city of culture and history. Jeonju is located in the Jeollla-Buk providence in South Korea, located approximately 2 hours south of Seoul by car.

Jeonju on the South Korean Map

Jeonju is a city known for its "hanok villages," which are old Korean traditional houses. You'll be able to get a glimpse and experience of culture, traditions, and history all in one place.

Jeonju is the hometown of many of our favorite Korean celebrities, such as... New from The Boyz, Yeji from ITZY, Jaemin from NCT, Taeyeon from Girls Generation, Hwasa and Wheein from MAMAMOO, TAG from Golden Child, Kim Woo Bin, and Lee Jang Woo!

All of these stars have great pride in their hometown, and one of the reasons why you can be proud of being a Jeonju native is because of its food. Jeonju has its own specialty dishes that are MUST TRY dishes and very worthy of trying. It's unique to Jeonju, and many of Jeonju's specialties are healthy and nutritious! So let's go and see what Korean food dishes are unique to Jeonju!

Jeonju Bibimbap

Bibimbap is already a famous Korean dish globally now, but Jeonju Bibimbap is unique. Using the freshest ingredients, Jeonju bibimbap has a LOT more toppings than your normal bibimbap. Though locals in Jeonju have often said they're sick of eating bibimbap because it's such a common dish, anyone and everyone who visits Jeonju should try Jeonju's very own bibimbap for an experience that's out of this world. Some Jeonju Bibimbaps have over twenty toppings, which is absolutely incredible!

Jeonju Bean Sprout Soup

Bean sprout soup may be just a pretty mediocre soup that can be found in any Korean restaurant, but Jeonju is known for its bean sprout farms, and they use some of the freshest ingredients, giving the soup a deeper taste. This is truly one of Jeonju's bragging points because they locally grow their own bean sprouts! After a night of drinking, recovering with a bowl of bean sprout soup is the best way to cure any hangover in Jeonju!

Jeonju Clam Porridge

People who have tried Jeonju's clam porridge have stated that they don't need to eat abalone porridge anymore -- Jeonju's clam porridge is all they need. If someone is sick or suffering from a cold, a nice warm bowl of clam porridge is the best!

Bean Noodles (Kong Gooksu)

When everyone in South Korea thinks of Jeonju, they automatically think of Jeonju bibimbap. However, locals actually say that buckwheat noodles and bean noodles are more famous in Jeonju. For bean noodles, Jeonju folks don't add salt to their bean noodles, but instead, they add sugar. They actually say it's so uncommon to see people put salt in their noodles, and that's one of Jeonju's unique characteristics!

Buckwheat Noodles (Soba)

In the summertime, nothing beats a refreshing bowl of buckwheat noodles in the city of Jeonju! There are plenty of fantastic buckwheat noodles in Jeonju, and this is another famous dish that locals would prefer over Jeonju bibimbap. Unlike traditional Japanese soba, the cold soup is served with the noodles already in the soup, but that doesn't make it any less tasty!

Wow, these dishes make me want to visit Jeonju! Jeonju is definitely a city with a lot of charm and amazing food as well. We understand why the celebrities are so proud of their hometown, and just because it's not in the Seoul metropolitan area, it doesn't mean you should exclude Jeonju from your Korean itinerary! What are your thoughts on these dishes? Have you tried any of these dishes in Jeonju? Is there another dish that's famous in Jeonju that we didn't include on this list? Make sure to let us know in the comments below!

Jeonju's Hanok Village is one of my favorite places. It is easy to navigate and the streets are traditionally decorated. There is a giant image of Taeyeon on one of the walls. Jeonju bibimbap is a classic. My mom hates bean noodles, but I tried it. At first it's really sweet, but it is too filling. It almost tastes like cold noodles in misugaru. They have a historical chocopie there. It's a bit pricey (over a $1 for one). There's a lot of traditional restaurants and cafes. Definitely a must go to location in Korea. 🖤❤️🤍💙
