Actor-turned-artist Park Shin Yang revealed details about his past health struggles.
On February 4, a video titled 'First time meeting with Park Shin Yang— a conversation that stayed with me' was uploaded to the 'SUNG SI KYUNG ' YouTube channel. In the video, he spoke candidly with Sung Si Kyung about stepping away from acting.
He shared that while working intensely as an actor, he suffered a back injury and thyroid problems that left him barely able to stand, sometimes for only about 30 minutes a day, a condition that lasted for more than a decade. During that time, he focused heavily on painting and has created around 200 works as an artist.
He clarified that he never officially retired from acting, explaining “I don’t feel frustrated about not acting right now. If I find a project that truly resonates with me, I would return anytime.” Sung Si Kyung commented that seeing someone who continued self-reflection and artistic expression during a long break return to acting would likely be very moving, to which Park responded warmly that he agreed.
Comments on the video included reactions such as “An actor like Park Shin Yang should continue acting,” and “He doesn’t feel like a typical celebrity; he feels like a true philosopher, with the depth of an artist. I can really sense the sincere, personal story he wants to convey, so I definitely want to visit his exhibition.”
Born in 1968, Park debuted in 1996 and built a strong filmography with works such as 'Lovers in Paris', 'War of Things', 'Sign', and 'My Lawyer, Mr. Jo'. Since appearing in 'My Lawyer, Mr. Jo' in 2019, he has focused primarily on painting. He is scheduled to hold the exhibition ‘Park Shin Yang’s Exhibition Show — The Fourth Wall’ at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts from March 6 to May 10.
