Many K-drama stars have spent part of their lives abroad, pursuing education and gaining global perspectives before captivating audiences on screen. From Canada to the U.S.A. and beyond, these international experiences shaped their personalities, language fluency, and artistic versatility.

Here’s a look at some beloved K-drama actors whose international education shaped the artists they are today.

Ahn Hyo Seop

Born in Seoul, Ahn Hyo Seop moved to Toronto, Canada, at the age of 7 and spent much of his childhood there. After nearly ten years overseas, he returned to South Korea at 17. His time and education in Canada shaped his fluent English, which is evident in his voice acting debut as "Jinu" in ‘K-Pop Demon Hunters.’

Choi Woo Shik

Oscar-winning actor Choi Woo Shik moved from South Korea to Vancouver, Canada, at the age of ten. He attended Pinetree Secondary School and later pursued studies at Simon Fraser University, both located in British Columbia. His years abroad made him fluent in English and gave him the confidence to connect with audiences worldwide.

Son Suk Ku

Versatile actor Son Suk Ku began studying overseas during middle school and continued his education in Canada and the United States. He majored in Visual Arts and Film at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and also attended the Vancouver Institute of Media Arts. His international exposure to art and cinema has deeply influenced his creative approach to acting.

Kim Ji Suk

Kim Ji Suk’s fluent English stems from his years in England, where he studied during his middle and high school years. His experience living abroad strengthened his language skills and broadened his worldview. Today, his confidence and charisma often shine through his works, showing traces of his international education.

Cha Eun Woo

Cha Eun Woo, the charismatic member of ASTRO and a popular actor, also has overseas study experience. During his elementary school years, he studied in Tagaytay, Philippines, as part of an English exchange program. His short time abroad helped him pick up the language early, contributing to his communication style often seen in global fan interactions.

Park Solomon

Rising star Park Solomon, known for his roles in ‘All of Us Are Dead’ and ‘Revenge of Others,’ has a truly fascinating multicultural background. Born in Uzbekistan to parents of Koryo-saram descent, he spent part of his childhood in Russia before moving to South Korea in fifth grade. His diverse upbringing exposed him to multiple cultures and languages, shaping him into the actor he is today.

Ma Dong Seok

One of Korea’s most beloved tough-guy actors, Ma Dong Seok, spent several years in the United States. During his stay in Ohio, he attended a community college and immersed himself in a new culture. His time in America helped him develop bilingual skills and a cross-cultural perspective that later contributed to his success in his work.

These K-drama actors prove that studying abroad can be more than just an educational experience; it can be a gateway to new perspectives and opportunities. Their international backgrounds not only enhanced their language skills but also gave them the confidence to connect with global audiences.
