Renowned actress Yoon Yeo Jung recently revealed that her eldest son has entered into a same-sex marriage in the United States, sparking conversation and drawing attention to issues of equality in South Korea’s conservative society.
The news came during a press conference for the film 'The Wedding Banquet' at the Busan Cinema Center’s BIFF Hall in Haeundae, Busan, on September 19.
The film, officially invited to this year’s 'Busan International Film Festival' (BIFF) under the 'World Cinema' section, is an unpredictable comedy about two same-sex couples planning a fake wedding, only to be confronted by a shrewd grandmother, “K-Grandma.” The story is a remake of Ang Lee’s 1993 film, which won the Golden Bear at the 'Berlin International Film Festival.'
Yoon plays Ja Young, the grandmother who embraces her gay grandson, Min (played by Han Ki Chan), with warmth and love despite societal prejudices, embodying the spirit of a caring “K-Grandma.”
In a previous interview with international media about the film, Yoon disclosed that her eldest son is gay and has married his partner in the United States. When asked about the perception of homosexuality in South Korea, Yoon commented, “Korea is still conservative regarding these issues. I hope the country will move forward.”
She continued, “Everyone is equal, whether they are homosexual or heterosexual. I think Korea should be like the U.S., but we’re not there yet. Having lived here for 79 years, I know it well.” Yoon further emphasized, “I don’t encourage dividing people into categories or labeling them. We are all human.”
Now celebrating its 30th edition, the 'Busan International Film Festival' opened on September 17 and will run until September 26 in Haeundae, Busan, showcasing 328 films from 64 countries.
