SF9’s Yoo Taeyang is set to return to the musical stage, taking on the lead role of Roger in the upcoming Korean production of ‘Rent’, which opens on November 9th KST.
‘Rent’ is a modern reimagining of Puccini’s opera La Bohème, portraying the raw and passionate lives of young artists living in New York City’s East Village during the 1990s. Based on the personal experiences of creator Jonathan Larson, the musical confronts issues like LGBTQ+ identity, AIDS, drug addiction, and poverty - topics that were largely overlooked by mainstream society at the time. The work has become a cultural milestone for giving voice to a generation’s struggles.
Since its Broadway debut in 1996, Rent has been praised for its impact and authenticity, earning four Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. In South Korea, the show first premiered in 2000 and has since become a beloved symbol of youth and rebellion among theatergoers.
Yoo Taeyang has been cast as Roger, a struggling songwriter grappling with the weight of his past and hopes for a future. He joins the musical’s 10th Korean season as a newly selected cast member through a competitive audition process.
Having steadily built his reputation through a variety of musicals, including ‘Altar Boyz’, ‘Court of Humanity’, ‘The Three Musketeers’, ‘Salieri’, and ‘Bloody Love,’ Yoo is expected to bring both vocal depth and emotional sincerity to this iconic role.
In a statement, Yoo said: “It’s such an honor to portray a character in a work as meaningful as ‘Rent.’ I’ve always wanted to be part of this production, so while I’m grateful, I also feel a great sense of responsibility. I hope to work harmoniously with the cast and bring my best to the stage without letting anyone down.”
The Korean production of ‘Rent’ starring Yoo Taeyang will run from November 9, 2025, through February 22, 2026, at COEX Artium in Seoul.
