On October 1 KST, the Presidential Committee for Popular Culture Exchange—a newly formed cultural diplomacy initiative—will officially launch with JYP Entertainment founder J.Y. Park and Culture Minister Choi Hwi Young serving as co-chairs. The committee is directly overseen by President Lee Jae Myung, who aims to strengthen Korea’s cultural influence on the global stage.
President Lee announced the launch on September 24, stating,
“The Popular Culture Exchange Committee takes its first steps today. With leaders from across the cultural industry, it will serve as a platform for public-private cooperation and expanded networks. I am confident it will lay the foundation for Korea to become a true global cultural powerhouse.”
To celebrate the launch, a special ceremony will be held as a cultural festival, with 270 invited citizens and performances by STRAY KIDS and LE SSERAFIM.
Park Jin Young—renowned producer and founder of JYP Entertainment—shared his thoughts on accepting the role:
“Taking on a government position is a heavy and complex responsibility for someone in the entertainment industry. But I believe K-pop is at a critical turning point, and this opportunity must not be missed.”
“From my experience working in the field, I’ve often wished for more institutional support. I’ll work to identify where effective support is truly needed and ensure that younger artists have more opportunities. I’ll do my best so that K-pop not only promotes Korean culture but becomes a global platform for mutual understanding and exchange.”
This new committee is expected to spearhead strategic initiatives in areas such as K-pop, K-dramas, K-films, and K-games—further solidifying South Korea’s position as a leader in global entertainment.
