Actor Lee Byung Hun made a playful remark about Son Ye Jin during the official press event for their new film ‘No Other Choice,’ but as his words stirred controversy over her personality, the mother of a child actor stepped forward to clarify.
On August 24, the mother of child actress Choi So Yul responded to fans’ questions on social media, writing: “It was also surprising for us. It was actually a fun, lighthearted anecdote he shared jokingly, but we also feel it’s a bit unfair how it’s been blown out of proportion. One day we’ll get the chance to share the full story. What’s true is that she was always very kind.”
A heartwarming story was also revealed about Son Ye Jin preparing a hard-to-find toy as a gift for Choi So Yul. The actress gifted her an “Aurora Ping” toy — something even “Santa couldn’t find.” The child actress’s mother expressed gratitude, saying, “It was the best Christmas present ever.” She also shared, “I’ll reveal someday how I even got Son Ye Jin’s number,” and has left supportive comments such as “I miss you” and “Fighting” on Son Ye Jin’s Instagram.
Earlier, at the film’s press conference on August 19, Son Ye Jin spoke about her return after giving birth, saying: “Becoming a mother in real life has really helped me portray this character.” Lee Byung Hun reacted with curiosity, replying, “That’s not quite what I saw on set.”
He elaborated, “The young actress playing my daughter asked me so many questions, and I would keep answering until suddenly the camera would roll and I was caught off guard. But Son Ye Jin never answered her once. So I asked her, ‘Can’t you answer her sometimes?’ and she said, ‘Sunbae, you handle it for me.’ Hearing her comments today, though, I realize she really was cherishing the moment in her own way.” His remarks drew laughter at the event.
Flustered, Son Ye Jin explained, “The child actress was full of curiosity and had a lot of questions, but since I had many emotional lines and detailed direction to follow from the director, I needed to stay focused.”
Nevertheless, online comments soon turned critical, with some saying, “Shouldn’t she have answered at least a few?” and “So she was being fake,” sparking an unnecessary personality controversy. As malicious comments grew, the child actress’s mother stepped up to defend Son Ye Jin.
‘No Other Choice,’ invited to the main competition of this year’s Venice International Film Festival, tells the story of Mansoo (Lee Byung Hun), a man who felt he had achieved everything in life until he is suddenly fired. Determined to protect his wife, two children, and the home he struggled to buy, he begins a personal battle to find re-employment. The film will be released in Korea this September.
