Another 'Boys II Planet' contestant is facing backlash after a netizen alleged that he misrepresented his background.
The upcoming Mnet idol survival show has already been generating buzz ahead of its premiere, especially after contestant Kim Geun Woo was accused of bullying and verbally abusing fellow trainees at his former agency.
Now, fellow contestant Kang Woo Jin has found himself at the center of online controversy after a netizen shared a comment from someone who knew him.
The comment revealed, "I was in the same class and school as him, lol. Got a link? I couldn’t find anything and didn’t want to sound like I’m defending him, but he went to all his schools in Goyang. It’s annoying to see him pretending to be a boy from Boryeong who came to Seoul. Don’t get the wrong idea. He’s not someone people usually speak well of, and where did the 'four years of training' story even come from?"
Goyang is a major satellite city of Seoul, located in Gyeonggi Province, with a population of over 1 million. In contrast, Boryeong is a coastal city in South Chungcheong Province, best known for Daecheon Beach and the annual Boryeong Mud Festival.
The netizen who shared the comment and Kang Woo Jin's school graduation photo wrote, “He went to kindergarten, elementary, middle, and high school all in Goyang, so why lie and say you're from Boryeong? lol. Sure, your place of birth could be Boryeong... but the issue is that on broadcasts, they paint you as this pure countryside boy who did busking in Boryeong before coming up to Seoul. That's deceptive!!”
Other netizens also joined the conversation and criticized the show for lying about Kang Woo Jin's background. These netizens speculated the show created false background information for Kang Woo Jin to have a more compelling story, in turn garnering more attention from viewers. They commented:
