Ahn Sung Hyun, husband of singer and actress Sung Yuri, who was previously taken into custody for receiving tens of billions of won in exchange for promises related to cryptocurrency exchange listings, has been released on bail.
According to a report by News1 on the 11th, the Seoul High Court’s Criminal Division 13 (Presiding Judges Baek Kang Jin, Kim Sun Hee, and Yoo Dong Kyun) granted Ahn’s request for bail, who is facing charges of fraud and bribery under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes.
The court set bail conditions including a 50 million KRW (about 36,000 USD) deposit, restrictions on his residence, a ban on contact with other defendants or witnesses, and a requirement to obtain court approval for travel abroad.
Previously, in December of last year, the Seoul Southern District Court’s Criminal Division 11 (Presiding Judge Jeong Do Seong) sentenced Ahn to 4 years and 6 months in prison. The court also ordered the forfeiture of two luxury watches he received during the bribery process. Co-defendant Lee Sang Joon, former CEO of Bithumb Holdings, was sentenced to 2 years in prison and ordered to forfeit 50.025 million won, while businessman Kang Jong Hyun, who requested the listing, was sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison.
Ahn was accused of colluding with Kang, known as the real owner of the cryptocurrency exchange ‘Bithumb’, to arrange coin listings. He was also charged with fraud for deceiving Kang by falsely claiming that “CEO Lee Sang Joon is demanding the 2 billion won listing fee urgently” in order to pocket the money.
Before the trial, Sung Yuri stated, “I pray that the truth about the pain and injustice my family is experiencing will be revealed.” However, after the guilty verdict was delivered, she faced public criticism as well. Sung Yuri, who had temporarily halted her activities, returned to broadcasting last month via home shopping, four months after Ahn was taken into custody.
