Veteran actor Kim Myung Min has officially parted ways with SIM Story Entertainment & Media Group, marking the end of a two-year partnership. As of early June, Kim has entered the free agent (FA) market following the expiration of his exclusive contract with the agency.
According to a report by Ten Asia on June 7, Kim Myung Min’s exclusive contract with SIM Story Entertainment & Media Group recently came to an end. The actor had signed with the company in July 2023 and has since collaborated with them for nearly two years.
Born in 1972, Kim Myung Min made his debut in 1996 as part of the sixth cohort of SBS public recruitment talents. Over the years, he has established himself as a powerhouse performer in both television and film, earning acclaim for his diverse roles in hit dramas such as 'Immortal Admiral Yi Sun-sin,' 'Behind the White Tower,' 'Beethoven Virus,' 'Law School,' and 'Your Honor.' His impressive filmography also includes memorable performances in 'My Love By My Side' and the 'Detective K' series.
In his latest project, the ENA drama 'Your Honor,' Kim delivered a standout performance alongside Son Hyun Joo, portraying a gangster boss with intense physical and emotional depth. To embody the role, Kim reportedly gained 8 kilograms and even filmed smoking scenes despite his non-smoker status—showcasing his characteristic dedication to character immersion. This marked his first drama in three years following 'Law School' in 2021.
During post-finale interviews for 'Your Honor,' Kim was cautious about the prospect of a second season, citing the saying, "There is no season two that surpasses season one." However, co-star Son Hyun Joo expressed strong enthusiasm, even stating he would accept a pay cut to join a second season. The drama concluded on September 10, 2024.
Looking ahead, Kim has confirmed his next role in director Park Hoon Jung’s upcoming film 'Tristes Tropiques,' which will be his first movie in five years since 'The Battle of Jangsari' (2019). This also marks a reunion with Park Hoon Jung, who previously directed Kim in the 2017 film 'V.I.P.,' where he played police officer Chae I Do. The film's cast also includes Park Hae Soo, Lee Shin Young, and Park Yoo Rim.
SIM Story Entertainment & Media Group, originally known for producing television programs such as 'Find! Delicious TV,' 'Dongchimi,' and 'Moo No Plan' since 2002, expanded into actor management through their partnership with Kim. They also ventured into drama production with a focus on actor-led narratives, aiming to become a global media entertainment company. The agency currently represents actors including Im Ye Jin, Jeong Ae Yeon, and Han So Eun. Notably, Jeong Ae Yeon portrayed Kim Myung Min’s on-screen wife in 'Your Honor.'
An industry insider commented, “Kim Myung Min successfully made his return with 'Your Honor' during his time with SIM Story Entertainment & Media Group and has already confirmed his next project. The past two years were significant for both parties. As he celebrates his 30th anniversary in the industry, there is growing interest in where he will head next.”
