IVE’s Wonyoung and Starship Entertainment won a partial victory in a lawsuit against YouTuber 'Sojang'.
On June 4th KST, the Seoul Central District Court (Presiding Judge Choi Mi Young) ruled partially in favor of Starship Entertainment in its damages lawsuit against YouTuber Sojang, the operator behind a controversial “cyber wrecking” channel known for spreading rumors about celebrities, including Wonyoung of IVE.
The court ordered the defendant, referred to as 'A (Sojang),' to pay 50 million KRW ($36,500) to Starship, half of the original 100 million KRW ($73,000) that the agency sought in damages.
Sojang gained notoriety for producing and distributing malicious videos filled with false claims targeting celebrities. Starship and Wonyoung have pursued both civil and criminal actions against the channel, citing ongoing defamation.
In a separate lawsuit filed individually by Wonyoung, the court also ruled that 'A' must pay her 50 million KRW in damages for personal defamation.
The defendant is currently facing multiple defamation allegations involving fabricated content about seven high-profile celebrities.
Previously, 'A' was fined 10 million KRW ($7,320) in September last year for defaming singer Kang Daniel and was also ordered to pay 30 million KRW ($22,000) in a related damages suit. In additional rulings, 'A' has been ordered to pay 76 million KRW ($55,700) to BTS members V and Jungkook, placing the operator under growing legal and financial pressure from repeated losses to idol groups.
