The latest episode of ‘JTBC Newsroom’ features the acclaimed director Bong Joon Ho, less than three weeks before the release of his highly-anticipated film ‘Mickey 17’, filmed in 2022. It stars Robert Pattinson in the titular role, and is supported by a stacked cast of Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, Steven Yeun, and Mark Ruffalo.

Bong Joon Ho calls ‘Mickey 17’ his most human work, recalling his staff joking about the film being ‘a sci-fi that reeks of smelly feet’, alluding to how true human nature will be laid bare. He also teases that for the first time, romance is a big part of the plot, likening it to a rendition of a coming-of-age film.
Bong Joon Ho elaborates that humans co-exist while compromising in recognition of the flaws of their own and of others, and that human life is best characterized not by perfection and heroism, but by the honest inadequacies. He highlights that such human pathetic-ness and vulnerability is a great juxtaposition to the grand setting of outer space, and hopes that the audience will find it as interesting as he does.

When asked about his personal most pathetic trait, Bong Joon Ho mentions that he is really greedy with food. He explains that his doctor has warned him about limiting the consumption of certain foods to about once a month. However, he shows his rebellious side by revealing that he is abiding to the ‘once-a-month’ rule with the loophole of rotating 30 kinds of forbidden food daily, showing his love for food. He admits it is immature, but he cannot help it.

‘Mickey 17’ is slated to premiere on February 28 in Korea, a week before it hits global theaters.
