Adele has shocked Korean fans at a recent concert for political reasons.
Since August 3rd (Korean time), Adele has been holding solo concerts in Munich, Germany. This series of concerts, expected to attract a total of 800,000 people over 10 performances, has garnered worldwide attention due to its unprecedented scale. However, from the very first day, it has upset Korean fans.
During her performance of "Rumour Has It," a giant LED screen on stage displayed the Rising Sun Flag. The reason for its appearance during the concert has not been clearly explained.
Korean netizens and media outlets are expressing their shock even more due to its usage in Germany, as the Rising Sun imagery is considered akin to the swastika symbol as taboo. Similarly, the Rising Sun Flag, which symbolizes Japanese militarism and is regarded in the same light as the swastika, is a controversial imagery in Korea, one that symbolizes imperialism and war crimes.
These videos, which have spread through various online communities, have left Korean fans outraged. Some netizens expressed their anger, saying, "I supported Adele so much, but the Rising Sun Flag?!" "Does she even know what the Rising Sun Flag signifies?" and "Boycott starts now."
Meanwhile, during this concert, Adele also drew attention by playing a broadcast of the women’s 100m final during the performance.
