According to media outlet reports on June 6 KST, the tvN drama 'Wise Resident Life', a spin-off series created from the popular medical drama 'Hospital Playlist', will not be aired in 2024.
Originally, 'Wise Resident Life' was scheduled to air in the second half of 2024 as a Sat-Sun drama on tvN. However, it's now been reported that tvN's current Sat-Sun drama lineup for 2024 is already full, with 'The Auditors' (Shin Ha Kyun, Lee Jung Ha) taking over after the ongoing series 'The Midnight Romance in Hagwon'; 'Love Next Door' (Jung Hae In, Jung So Min) scheduled next, 'Jeong Nyeon' (Kim Tae Ri, Shin Ye Eun) coming up afterward, and 'Love on a Single-Log Bridge' (Joo Ji Hoon, Jung Yoo Mi) wrapping up the year.
'Wise Resident Life', starring Go Yoon Jung, Shin Si Ah, Kang Yoo Suk, and more, tells the stories of professors and residents at a general hospital. Initially, the drama garnered interest from fans of the 'Hospital Playlist' series. However, while medical dramas like 'Hospital Playlist' were well-received in the past, it's unlikely that 'Wise Resident Life' will be received well this year as a result of the ongoing protests by medical professionals in South Korea.
In February of 2024, South Korea's Yoon Seok Yeol administration announced a new plan to address the country's shortage of professional physicians. The plan included a dramatic increase in medical school acceptance numbers from 3,058 to 5,058 per year beginning in 2025. Angered by this new plan, which some practicing doctors felt "diminished the quality of medical education" and "had implications for health insurance costs", medical professionals have been "walking out" from their jobs in order to voice their disapproval of the plan.
Due to the ongoing protests, public opinion toward medical professionals is currently at an all-time-low in South Korea. In light of the situation, it seems that viewers will have to wait until 2025 to catch tvN's 'Wise Resident Life' on air.
